Engineering Jobs, Scope & Salary

Engineering is the most popular UG level course among science stream students in India. Each year, engineering colleges across India pump out hundreds of thousands of engineering graduates! As a result, the engineering job-market has become saturated. As of now, engineering graduates are even known to take up non-engineering jobs (like banking, administrative roles, entrepreneurship etc).

An engineering graduate’s job profile and post depends upon his/her area of specialization. For example, an automobile engineering has access to job posts and profiles such as – automobile engineer, plant supervisor, quality control officer etc. Similarly, a software engineer has access to job profiles and roles such as – software engineer, project manager, software tester etc.

In short, the job profile depends upon the specific branch chosen by the student. On an average, starting salary for engineers in India is – 25 to 50K INR per month. This is just an average figure. The actual amount depends upon factors such as – area of specialization/branch, candidate’s college and more.

For example, a candidate passing out from a premier institute like IIT-B will be able to command a salary package that runs into 100-200K INR per month. On the other hand, students hailing from tier 2 and 3 colleges will have to settle down for relatively paltry salary!

2 Integrated B.E. or B.Tech. courses

An integrated engineering program combines two courses. The course duration is generally 5 years. Candidates who have passed 12th Science with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) subjects are eligible to pursue integrated engineering programs. Some of the notable integrated engineering programs are –

  • B.E. or B.Tech. + MBA

In case of the first program, the engineering program is bundled together with MBA program. In the second case, the engineering program is bundled with LL.B. (which is a law program). In the third case, the engineering program is bundled with a PG level engineering program (M.E. or M.Tech.).

Integrated Engineering Jobs, Scope & Salary

This program combines engineering degree as well as a PG degree. This opens new doors of opportunities in front of the candidate. For example, after completing B.Tech. + MBA program, a candidate may even get access to managerial jobs and administrative posts.

Similarly, after completing B.Tech. + LL.B. program, one may gain access to jobs in the legal sector also (like law consultancies). In short, after completing one such program, a candidate will be able to find technical (engineering) as well as non-technical (non-engineering) jobs. On an average, the starting salary could be anywhere between 50-80K INR per month.

3 Diploma in Engineering courses

Technically speaking, candidates who have passed even 10th standard are eligible to pursue diploma in engineering programs in India! These are basically technical education programs. The course duration is generally three years. The program, like engineering, deals with technical subjects. Some of the popular diploma in engineering programs include –

After completing a Diploma in engineering course, a candidate may apply for relevant jobs or pursue higher technical programs and qualifications. Diploma in engineering qualification holders may pursue B.E. or B.Tech. program through the lateral entry. When it comes to lateral entry, a candidate may secure admission directly into the second academic year of B.E. or B.Tech. program.

Diploma in Engineering Jobs, Scope & Salary

Diploma in engineering holders have access to government as well as private sector jobs. The recruiting organization, job profile and post depends upon one’s qualification. For example, diploma in mechanical engineers are usually hired by firms involved in manufacturing, machine design and operations, government organizations like Indian Railways etc. Similarly, diploma in electrical engineering holders are usually hired by firms involved in manufacture of electrical goods, state electricity boards and more.

In short, the job profile and post depends upon the branch or discipline chosen by the candidate. Let us talk about the starting salary now. In the private sector, diploma in engineering holders can expect around 20-45K INR per month. This is just an average figure. The actual figure depends upon the branch chosen by the candidate, type of college he/she is passing out from, type of the job etc. When it comes to government job, the salary will be based on the pay scale, grade and department.

4 B.Sc. Courses

After Engineering, B.Sc. programs are what 12th Science students choose often. When it comes to B.Sc. program, the course duration is 3 years. After graduation, one may go for PG course- M.Sc. It lasts for 2 years. Some good B.Sc. courses are-

B.Sc. Jobs, Scope & Salary

B.Sc. graduates in India have access to different types of job opportunities. Government jobs and private sector jobs are quite popular among them. As always, the job post, profile of type of recruiter heavily depends upon the discipline chosen by the candidate (agriculture, physics, chemistry etc).

Since it is a Bachelor’s Degree, a candidate is free to apply for any government job that requires a Bachelor’s Degree as the minimum educational qualification required (like UPSC, state PSCs, banking jobs etc).

Let us talk about the average salary now. In private sector, B.Sc. graduates can obtain a salary of around 30-50K INR per month. Please note that this is just an average figure (not considering the discipline chosen by the candidate). In government sector, the salary is based on the pay scale, grade and type of organization (central or state).

If you want to boost your career prospects, I’d suggest you to go for higher studies after completing B.Sc. One may pursue M.Sc. and get into the teaching profession. One may even pursue MBA and thus stand a chance of getting a better salary package.

Why choosing the right course is necessary?

As mentioned above, there are large number of courses available. A student has to choose one course from the pile. This can prove to be a difficult task. Difficult it is, and it is also an important step!

Why is selecting the right professional course so important? It is because the entire professional life and career prospects depends on the value that a course holds! Also, the course should ‘suit’ the student’s aptitude! Let me describe it to you in detail.

Different types of courses hold different value. Some courses helps one get a job (government or private) really quickly. While some other courses are commonly pursued by people around the globe and hence the job market is too saturated. Some courses used to hold much value in the past. But in present time, they barely have any value! So, looking at these factors, it is important to do a bit research about a course, before you start pursuing it! One must look at things such as career prospects, value of the course etc.

Another thing to look for is whether the course suits the student’s aptitude or not! You see, different courses have different levels of difficulties associated with them. Some courses are too tough for average students to pursue whereas some other courses are easy to go through!

The point is- before you select course, check whether you have the aptitude to clear the exams associated with that course! There are many aptitude and eligibility tests available. Using such tests, one may check whether the course suits them or not!

Online aptitude tests are awesome! You may rely on these tests and get yourself evaluated while sitting at home! You may take such tests on your smartphones, laptops or desktops. Both free and paid aptitude tests are available on the internet.

If you want a traditional experience, you may rely on career counselors. A skilled and experienced career counselor can gauge your academic aptitude and help you out accordingly. In short, choosing the right course is very important. Choosing a course that you are not capable of pursuing will have negative impact on your academic life.

It will result in lots of wasted time if you select a course that you are not capable to pursue. You will fail in the exams and won’t be able to graduate on time! You’ll even think about dropping out too, if things go terribly wrong! In any case, it is always good to check things first, stay safe and be prepared! In this case, it can be done by just checking whether you have the aptitude to go ahead with the said course!

If you have any doubt or query regarding a professional course, career or training program, feel free to ask it in the comment section. The question will be answered by me or my team of experts. As you can see, I’ve already answered thousands of questions. If you have any doubt, drop it in the comment section.

That’s it. I think I’ve managed to list almost all the good professional courses that one could pursue after 12th Science. Remember, do not rush with the selection process. Think calmly, do a bit of research and decide which course will suit you the best. The choice you make will define your career and rest of your life to an extent! Wish you all the best!

    • Jeemon, the field of Biochemistry is not fully developed in India. If you pursue the course from a good Institute, you may be able to land decent job. Otherwise you may have to struggle a bit. Abroad, there is good scope. The R&D sector there is well developed and high paying. I don’t suggest or recommend colleges though.

I’ve enquired you earlier about “what should I go for after XIIth” telling you about my interests…
Sir what you told was giving Aerospace engineering a look but sir I found it totally out of my interest.
It deals with designing and studies of Aircrafts but I’m interested in studying and exploring about space (Astronomy).
Sir, can you please suggest me something??

    Reply
    • Md Anas, then you may consider going for a pure Science course like Physics. You may later specialize in Space related branches in PG programs like M.Sc. and PhD.
Actually Aerospace Engineering doesn’t deals with normal Aircraft. Aeronautical Engineering branch does that. Aerospace Engineering deals with Outer space vehicles such as Space Shuttles, Satellited etc. That’s why I recommended it to you.

I have selected science and ICT for my further career after taking guidance from my relatives and teachers. I worked really hard this time but it was of no use. I love subjects :- ICT, Physics and Maths. I have got ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘C’ grades respectively although my English is also good and I got ‘C’ in it. Other than this I also want to do something for my country, therefore I joined Indian Navy at an early age of 11, I did 2 years there but was not selected for any further training in the Navy. I also have got a great interest in sports, but my favorite game is football. I have played for clubs in Mumbai. I also did UCMAS when I was young as I have interest in Mathematics. I am also a good athlete as I have won a bronze medal in running 200 meters at state level. I really try my best to get ‘A’ grade but have never got it after 4th grade. I have so many hobbies and that’s why I am really confused on what should I take for my career? I just need your little help. And one thing very important I never have got interest in studies, I only learn because of my parents pressure.

  206. Hi Sir,

I feel he is starting understanding the importance of studies now.
but still he lacks in the responsibility right now.
I have to be on his back to study.

his focus & goals for the career are missing.

may be this is the reason that he is 14yrs of age and rest students in the class are of 15th years.

please suggest how should I help him to finish his course well in advance.

    Reply
    • Shefali, the best way to face this situation is by creating a good timetable. Sit with him and make a time table. Make sure that you devote time towards games and all, along with studies. The advantage of making and following a time table is that by following it religiously like for 3 weeks and more, it becomes a habit. Maybe it will help him start studying without you having to force him each and every time!

      Reply
    • And Shefali, you may even reward him and motivate him when he follows the time table without any frills! 🙂

    • Shefali, for building a rewarding career in that sector, one could pursue courses like- Computer Science Engineering, BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications) etc. And in case of such programs, to get admission in a good college, academic performance of a student must be good. Explain these facts to your son. Maybe this will result in him taking studies more seriously.

I think due to my family problems I have not devoted quality time with him, but right now I am doing that..but he hardly talks about his interests.

in that case I have to initiate and help him by taking your help offcourse.

can you suggest me how can I check with him his areas of interest.

I really want him to score good marks in 10th standard

    Reply
    • Shefali, that’s a tricky situation. Well, the best way to know more about his areas of interest is by communicating. Don’t rush it up, if he is uncooperative. I think you can take help of his friends too, maybe they know what he is interested in.If these things don’t help, I think you could take help of his teachers or approach a career counselor.

So, qualified professionals are required in this field. Regarding salary, I can’t pin point it out. You may work in Government/Private hospitals. Also, you may start your own private clinic, if you are are into entrepreneurship.

  336. Thanks a lot sir, this is my last query , & I’ll not bother you anymore sir! Actually you didn’t say anything about hardware & networking OR courses like tally ERP, payroll, tax computation. etc. Aren’t those courses good enough? Or is it better than software/multimedia & web based courses ? It’s just that I need a job badly after doing these courses, our current financial condition is not good, but I’ll manage somehow! So, which course should I do first, if you suggest ‘DO ALL COURSES’, then I’ll do all the courses only along with my graduation course? Is this order okay? multimedia & web>software>hardware & networking>tally ERP, payroll, tax computation.etc. My whole career depends upon your suggestion sir. Thanks in advance. 🙂

& please share how can I contact with you? Do you have any Facebook page /profile/anything else?

    • Spaz, first of all, I urge you not to hurry, while taking the decision. Take your time, consult some good teachers too! Personally, I prefer software courses, followed by multimedia. I’ve heard that hardware and networking courses are good too, so that comes third.

Software courses, once finished, will allow you to take up freelance jobs online.

Search my name on Facebook and you shall find me! 🙂

… & from where should I study graphics/Web DESIGNING, animation ? Which one is the best computer centre? BRAINWARE/CMC? IS THERE HIGH JOB SCOPE IN THIS LINE OR should I try software courses(c, c++, Android, Java, Oracle. Etc.) OR hardware & networking OR courses like tally ERP, payroll, tax computation will be better? Currently I’m very much confused sir. please help.

    • Spaz, job scope is ample, thanks to pharmaceutical industries, agriculture sector, healthcare (hospitals, labs) etc. The lucrative part is a job in R&D field. But for that, you have to go for PG courses too!

Regarding computer centers, each place has those famous ones. Like in my area, ‘Arena’ institutes are well known! You must research a bit to find which institute is good, in your area.

If you have a flair for coding and languages, you may go for software courses too. It has more potential!

  338. Hello,
Sir, I am from West Bengal. I am a science student(pure). I passed my 10th(2011) & 12th(2013) standard examinations with 62.5% & 58% respectively. I am basically an average student. After my 12th standard results came out, I didn’t know what to do, I took Microbiology(H) as I was good in biology(?) ! But now after 1 year, I regret about taking that decision. At that time I didn’t take any kind of counselling, like which subject should I take! And that was the most severe mistake of my life. Now, my 1st year results will be published within few weeks, and I don’t think I will pass in that examination, I am completely shattered, my confidence level has gone down, & my family members have lost all their faith on me! I don’t know what to do in future. This is the first time I have ever failed & am observing that the people I knew suddenly changed.
Note: I have interest in various latest gadgets, I am always up to date with news of latest gadgets! I love to play latest pc/mobile games! I prefer to watch a lot of Hollywood films & love sci-fi/action/super hero films, I really like those visual effects /graphics! I am a gadget freak, who loves latest technologies & a freelance photographer, I love adventure and discovery/NGC is my favourite channel! I think my hobbies are a bit idiotic, but can’t help! :'( I elaborated my problem & interest sir, SUGGEST ME A JOB ORIENTED SUBJECT WHICH WILL BE GOOD FOR MY FUTURE & I I don’t know what to do sir, please help & sorry for making this a bit long! If not anything, then I’ll try to continue my Microbiology(H) only with probably a course you will suggest.

    Thank You. 🙂

    • Confused guy :), in 12th standard, did you pursued both Maths and Biology subjects? In that case, you may go for Engineering related courses. For example, 5 years long (B Tech + M Tech) Engineering course. Or 5 years (B Tech + MBA) combined course. If you are looking for biology related courses, I would suggest Pharm D. Animation is one such field, where, with the right skill set, you can make it really big. If you have sound skills to succeed in that field, go for it.

    • Twinkle, looking at the circumstances, dropping out is a decent idea. You may always take help of good coaching and give the entrance tests a better shot the next time.

I urge you to select one of Engineering and Medicine, as it will give you a ‘definite goal’ and help you concentrate your efforts in a much better way!

    • Shivam, just visit UPSC’s site, find out the date for applying and register for NDA exam! But keep in mind the age limit and educational qualification details. You must not be above 19 years of age. You must be appearing/have completed 12th Science with Physics and Mathematics as your main subjects.

    • Sree Lakshmi, according to me, both Civil and Architecture are promising. Civil Engineering is a Core branch. It is an evergreen one, when it comes to job opportunities.

Since you are genuinely interested in Civil branch, go on with it! And in case you don’t make it, you have other branches like Architecture to rely on.

Personally, I prefer CS Engg more.

You see, I’m from Gujarat. So not much aware about the rating and ranking of Colleges and Universities up north. Hope that you understand.

However, I suggest you to take help of your teachers to hunt down the most suited college! Best of luck!

    • Simran, you have scored good marks. I guess you can get admission into good Engineering Colleges with those kind of marks! But since you are not interested in B Tech and are into CA, I must say that CA has got good scope. But taking drop is a big step. I’m not against it, but can’t you try to get admission into an Engineering college and prepare for the CA entrance at the same time?

Agreed that it is difficult, but then I think you are capable of doing that! 🙂 Regarding Media and Mass Communication, all I can say is that the institute and course should be good. Plus, you should also have some skills for thriving in that field.

Civil Engineering is a part of the core branch of Engineering. You may get Government and private jobs with ease, depending on your marks and aptitude after graduation.
