Last Updated on August 7, 2023 by Vishnu Nambiar

The number of Engineering branches have increased much in the last 10 years. There are so many new branches of Engineering being introduced that students are confused about which one to select! But what about the top Engineering branches? Wait, we will get to that point soon. The standard of Engineering graduates who pass out each year has also decreased substantially. This is due to the increased number of private Engineering colleges and increased number of seats.

Many of the Engineering graduates I know don’t even know to speak English properly. Many of them don’t know how to write a letter or application. It is funny how they pronounce certain words. You might be thinking why I’m telling all this stuff, which is not related to top 5 Engineering branches. Well, just look at the sorry state of our education.

Nowadays, just having an Engineering degree doesn’t guarantee you a job (with decent salary)! Look at those IT graduates who passed out from average ranked colleges. Many of them are still unemployed. They are forced to take up low salary jobs. Why does this happen? Well, they selected the wrong college and the wrong course. Yes, selecting the wrong Engineering course can land you in serious trouble. Now, if you have a degree in IT Engineering from a reputed college, you may easily bag a good job. But is different when it comes to average ranked colleges.

So, it becomes necessary to choose the best Engineering branch if you can’t make it to a premier college. This list is all about the top 5 Engineering branches available in India. If you want guaranteed job after graduation, then you must make sure that the course which you select is among the top and the best ones.

Here are the top 5 branches of Engineering. The list is in no particular order. I’ve formed this list after discussing with Engineering graduates of various branches from different colleges (top institutes to bakwaas ones). Go through the list:

NEW JOB ORIENTED ENGINEERING BRANCHES (2016 UPDATE)-

important section below

They say that to stay ahead of competitors in the job market, one should act smart right from college days. I say that one has to take smart decisions even before choosing an Engineering branch! For example, have you guys even thought about the immense saturation that Engineering field has been undergoing?

If you haven’t given it much thought, do think about it now. As I told before, the increase in number of colleges has increased competition in the job market by pumping up the numbers of Engineering graduates.

The smartest way to stay ahead of the crowd is by getting admission in a premier Institute! Some of us manage to accomplish that task. But the vast majority of above average, average and below average students end up in mediocre and low quality institutes. In order to get into a premier engineering college, one must crack relevant engineering entrance test(s).

Another way around is to have sublime skills and passion about that particular field of Engineering. Take for example the stories of illustrious College dropouts like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg etc. They were talented and skillful, so, college Degree didn’t mattered at all to them! If you belong to the same mould as them, worry not about the college!

But the most practical solution, in case of mediocre students is to select the Engineering branch to pursue wisely! The key is to select a less saturated branch. A branch that promises good job opportunities and less competition by the time you graduate!

I’ve assembled a list of Engineering branches that are very less saturated. A good number of them are related to Agriculture field. They are less opted by students and less popular. But job opportunities are available in abundance in both Government and Private sector, when it comes to these branches. Let’s start the list-

    • Government job vacancies are filled through tests conducted by state or central Government authorities. Such tests ensure that the playing ground is level for all candidates (caste based reservations play spoil sport though). Thus, to an extent, it is safe to say that if you prepare well for such tests and have good academic aptitude, you may land such jobs without much trouble.

Yes, you must be aware of allergies and all. It could play spoil sport, when it comes to this industry. After chemical engineering, you may find work in places like- pharmaceutical industry, refineries, food processing plants, fertilizer manufacturing companies, chemical industry etc.

My personal choice would be Mechanical engineering. IC is a good branch too. Just ensure that the university has good faculty and placement record.

    • Hari Prasad, both are good branches. Mechanical is a core branch, a traditional one. After Graduation, you could easily find employment in heavy industries as well as many Government departments too (like Railways, Armed Forces etc). Biomedical Engineering is a relatively new branch. But it has scope and things will brighten up in India.

    • Selvi, ask her what her passion is. Also, try taking her to field trips so that she gets to know about the work environment associated with each Engineering branch. Maybe this step could help her find a job (and thus Engineering Branch) that she will be comfortable with for the rest of her life!

Also, I would like to add that lot depends on your passion and aptitude. From your query, I can see that you have a genuine passion towards Computer Science. In that case, go on with it! Just make sure that you get admission in a reputed college, with good ranking and placement record. All the best!

    • Alisha, that’s rubbish! Chemical Engineering has got good scope! I have many friends who have landed good Government and private jobs after completing Chemical Engineering! All you need to do is work hard and prove that you have good aptitude! Many chemicals related companies directly recruit Chemical Engg graduates. Also, government players like ONGC recruit them. Some other big firms are- Indian Oil Corp, Cement manufacturing companies etc. My point is that job opportunities are available in abundance, for Chemical engg grads!
