1 B.E. or B.Tech. in Marine Engineering
B.E. or B.Tech. in Marine Engineering is an engineering and technology program. It is an undergraduate level engineering program that is related to field of marine engineering.
After completing this program, one may become a marine engineer aboard a merchant navy ship. As we all know, a merchant navy ship consists of complex machinery on it. This is a 4 years long Undergraduate Program. On completion of the program, successful candidates are provided Class 4 Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency. This certificate is awarded by the Ministry of Shipping.

Candidate are required to satisfy the age limit criteria. They should be between 17-25 years of age when the course starts.
Eligibility criteria

Candidate should be physically fit for sea service. He/she should be physically fit according to the guidelines set by the DG Shipping. Applicant should have eyesight up to 6/12 in both eyes or 6/9 in the better eye, 6/18 in the other eye. He/she should not have color blindness.
2 GME (Graduate Marine Engineering)
GME course has been crafted keeping the needs of engineering graduates in mind. This one-year long program can help an engineering graduate (hailing from a relevant engineering branch/discipline) enter the merchant navy sector!
The curriculum deals with subjects such as – marine engineering, pumping systems, marine machinery, motors, hydraulics and pneumatics, marine engineering practices, ship safety and more.
GME course is a pre-sea training course for Graduates. It is a 1 year long program. On completion of the program, candidates are awarded the Class 4 Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency. This certificate is awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, India.

Only Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture Graduates are eligible to apply for this program. Aspirants should also have scored minimum 50% marks in the final year.
Medical standard
Candidate should be physically fit for sea service. He/she should be physically fit according to the guidelines set by the DG Shipping. Applicant should have eyesight up to 6/12 in both eyes or 6/9 in the better eye, 6/18 in the other eye. He/she should not have color blindness.
3 B.Sc. Nautical Science
This is a Bachelor of Science course. The academic program belongs to the UG level. UG stands for undergraduate level.
If you want to become a navigation officer aboard a merchant navy ship, this program will be of help to you. Navigation plays an important role in merchant navy sector. Without skilled navigators, a merchant navy can get into different kinds of problems.
For example, a navigator can keep the ship of its path, preventing it from running into shallow or choppy waters! Similarly, they can help keep the ship maintain its ideal speed and direction. 5 Higher National Diploma (Marine Engineering)
This program is well known as HND Marine Engineering course. It is an advanced diploma program that is related to the field of marine engineering. The course duration is two years.
The program covers subjects related to marine engineering such as – marine engineering, pumping systems, marine machinery, motors, hydraulics and pneumatic, marine engineering practices, ship safety and more.
Eligibility criteria
Minimum educational qualification required is – passed 12th standard with PCM (Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics) subjects OR completed Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics Engineering or completed B.Sc. in Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics with PCM subjects in 12th standard.

6 Higher National Diploma (Nautical Science)
This maritime program is well known as HND Nautical Science. As the name suggests, this program deals with the discipline of nautical science. HND Nautical Science is an advanced diploma program.
As discussed before, nautical science deals with aspects such as – navigation, ship stability, cargo handling, meteorology, bridge equipment, nautical mathematics, nautical physics etc. After completing this program, one may well be on his/her way to become a navigating officer aboard a merchant navy ship!

Eligibility criteria
Minimum educational qualification required is – passed 12th standard with PCM (Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics) subjects OR completed Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronic Engineering or completed B.Sc. in Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics with PCM subjects in 12th standard.
Medical standard
Candidate must be physically and medical fit as per the International Maritime Standards. In other words, he/she must be fit for sea service according to the guidelines set by International Maritime Standards. Candidate must have unaided vision of 6/9 in each eye. He/she should not have color blindness.
7 DME (Pre-Sea Training after Diploma)
This course is well known as DME (not to be confused with Diploma in Marine Engineering). It is a pre-sea training program that has been created keeping the needs of diploma holders in mind.
Suppose a diploma holder wants to build a decent career in merchant navy sector, then he/she may pursue this pre-sea training program and realize his/her dream! It is a full-time residential program and the course duration is two years.
After completing two years long DME program, a candidate may serve six months of sea service aboard a merchant navy ship. On completing this sea service stint, he/she will be able to obtain Class 4 Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency from the DG Shipping of India!
In other words, DME program is a gateway towards marine engineering job (for diploma holders).
Age limit
Applicant must not be more than 28 years of age at the time of commencement of the program.
Eligibility criteria
Minimum educational qualification required is – completed Diploma in Mechanical/Marine/Electrical & Electronic Engineering/Naval Architecture/Electrical Engineering. Minimum aggregate marks required in the final year is 50%. Candidate must also have obtained 50% marks in English subject in 10th or 12th board examination.
Medical standard
Candidate should be physically fit for sea service. He/she should be physically fit according to the guidelines set by the DG Shipping. Applicant should have distance vision of 6/12 in each eye. He/she should not have color blindness.
8 Diploma in Marine Engineering
Diploma in Marine Engineering is a technical diploma program, which is related to the field of marine engineering. Please don’t confuse it with the pre-sea training program of DME! Diploma in Marine Engineering, the technical diploma program, is not a pre-sea training course!
Diploma in Marine Engineering course is three years long. And 10th passed students are eligible to pursue this course. After completing Diploma in Marine Engineering program, a candidate may apply for B.E. or B.Tech. in Marine Engineering. In this way, he/she may enter the world of merchant navy.
Age limit
Applicant must not be more than 20 years of age on the date of commencement of the program.
Eligibility criteria
Minimum educational qualification required is – passed 10th standard from a recognized board.
9 Diploma in Nautical Science
As the name suggests, this diploma program is related to the field of nautical science. The course duration is one year. This program is well known as DNS in India.
Many maritime institutes across India are known to offer DNS program, which leads to a B.Sc. Nautical Science Degree! First of all, the DNS program is a one year long pre-sea training program. The pre-sea training program deals with subjects such as – navigation, seamanship, communication systems, ship construction/architecture, ship stability, cargo handling, MARPOL, marine engineering, communication skills, leadership etc.
One completing the pre-sea training successfully, a candidate will obtain DNS certificate/qualification. Thereafter, he/she must undertake an 18 months long onboard training program. On completing this on-board training program (semesters 3 to 5), a candidate will be awarded the Advanced Diploma in Nautical Science certificate/qualification.
This is followed by a 4 months long post-sea training program (semester 6). Technically, this is a preparatory program for the Second Mates examination. To obtain the Second Mates (FG) license, a candidate must also complete the compulsory STCW courses. By completing all the six semesters, a candidate may obtain his/her B.Sc. Nautical Science Degree!
On completing the post-sea training program & STCW courses, a successful candidate may obtain his/her FG certificate of competency from the DG Shipping of India. Thereafter, he/she may don the role of a ‘Third Officer’ aboard a merchant navy ship. Check out the list of DNS colleges in India.
Age Limit
Upper age limit is 25 years. Candidate should not be more than 25 years of age.
Educational Qualifications
10+2 passed (with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English subjects) from a recognized board or equivalent. Minimum aggregate marks in PCM subjects must not be less than 60%. Marks in English subject in 10th and 12th board exams should not be less than 50%.
Medical standard
Candidate should be physically and medically fit as per Merchant Shipping Rules. Candidate should not be color blind. He/she should have 6/6 vision without the assistance of any visual aids.
10 GP Rating
GP Rating is a pre-sea training program. The program trains candidates and turn them into skilled deck or cadets. After completing GP Rating program, a candidate may join a shipping company as an engine rating or deck rating.
Deck ratings take care of tasks such as – steering the ship, assisting the deck officer, securing the ship to the dock, carry out maintenance etc. On the other hand, engine ratings take care of tasks such as – maintaining shipboard machinery, oiling, greasing, servicing, inspection, repair, monitoring equipment and assisting engineering officers.
In short, deck and engine ratings play the role of support staff. They usually play a supporting role by assisting the officers (deck and engine). GP Rating program deals with the following main subjects –

A physical admission of the candidate will be carried out before admission. This is to make sure that the candidate meets all the physical and medical standards set by the DG Shipping of India.
11 Saloon Rating (CCMC)
Saloon Rating is a pre-sea training program. This program is also known as CCMSC. It stands for Certificate Course in Maritime Catering.
CCMC course primarily focuses on the catering-side of merchant navy. As we all know, a merchant navy ship travels around the world in a year. It goes from one port to another. And the journey may span different continents!
In other words, the vessel may remain away from land for months. Meanwhile, it is also important to feed the people aboard the ship! This is where maritime catering comes handy. Merchant navy ships are equipped with a catering unit, which takes care of the sailors’ hunger pangs!
The main aim of CCMC course is to train students and turn them into skilled maritime catering professionals. The program deals with subjects such as –

Age of the candidate should be between 17½ to 25 years of age.
Eligibility criteria
Minimum qualification required- 10+2 passed from a recognized board. Some institutes are also known to accept 10th passed students. Candidate should be fit as per Merchant Shipping rules.
Medical standard
At the time of admission, an applicant is subjected to a physical examination by a qualified Doctor. This is to make sure that the candidate meets all the physical and medical standards defined by the DG Shipping of India.
12 ETO (Electro Technical Officer) course
ETO stands for Electro Technical Officer. It is a pre-sea training program. The duration of this program according to the DG Shipping website is – 85 days. Actually, the duration may vary from one institute to another. Generally, it is around 4 months. 4 months of ETO program is followed by 6 months of sea service.
ETO curriculum deals with the following subjects –

ETO training course will help eligible candidates become Electrical Officers aboard merchant navy ships. Electrical Officers are responsible for maintaining and supervising all the electrical and electronic equipment present in a ship.

Merchant navy jobs, scope & salary
Merchant navy sector is known to generate ample amount of job opportunities each year. This sector is known to offer decent salary packages to its employees.
As we all know, merchant navy plays an important role in international trade. Merchant navy vessels play an important role in transporting goods from one place to another. A world without merchant navy ships and vessels is quite difficult to imagine.
Food, medicine, machinery, electronic equipment, minerals, petroleum & natural gas, chemicals & fertilizers, automobiles & their components – merchant navy plays and important role in transporting essential items, which play an important role in our day to day lives!
Just imagine what will happen to our life if merchant navy sector stops functioning for a month! It will lead to problems like – food shortage, lack of life-saving medicines, and other problems.
Merchant navy sector employs different types of professionals. Aboard a merchant navy vessel, one may find marine engineers, navigators, communication specialists, deck cadets, engine room workers, kitchen staff, fire & safety professionals, security guards etc.

Similarly, if you have completed GP Rating program, you may become a deck or engine room cadet. If you’ve completed maritime catering program, you may become a part of the catering and housekeeping staff.
Professionals who have adequate experience under their belt may rise through the ranks. For example, a junior engineer may crack relevant tests and become third engineer. With time, one may appear for relevant tests and become second engineer.
This ‘rising through the ranks’ thing is applicable in case of other posts too. Salary package depends upon your job profile and rank. Officers get a better salary when compared to those who possess ratings qualification.
On an average, officers’ starting salary could be anywhere around 50-100K INR per month. For support staff, it could be anywhere between 45-70K INR per month. These are just average figures though. The actual amount may depend upon the profile of the employer, current economic scenario and other external factors.

Most of the good course are meant for science stream students. You may try courses like STCW, ratings programs etc.
