B.Sc. Nautical Science Course Details

B.Sc. stands for Bachelor of Science. Technically speaking, it is a Bachelor’s Degree course. This academic program belongs to UG (undergraduate) academic level. Candidates who have passed 12th Science with PCM subjects are eligible to pursue this course. The course is three years long.

As the name suggests, this program deals with the discipline of nautical science. What is nautical science all about, some of you may ask. Nautical Science deals with aspects such as – navigation, seamanship, ship operations, cargo handling, ship stability, ship construction, basics of marine engineering, communication skills, etc.

In other words, nautical science primarily deals with the navigation of a merchant navy ship. It also deals with ship operations, cargo management, and seamanship. After completing B.Sc. Nautical Science course, a candidate will be able to don the role of a Deck Officer. With time, he/she may rise through the ranks and even become a Captain!

Eligibility criteria

Educational Qualification

  1. Minimum educational qualification required to pursue B.Sc. Nautical Science course is – Completed 12th Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects.
  2. Candidate must have scored at least 60% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics subjects.
  3. A candidate must also have scored at least 50% marks (separately) in English subjects.

Note: Minimum aggregate marks criteria may vary from one institute to another. Candidates possessing relevant higher qualifications (like DNS) are also eligible to pursue this course.

Age limit

Age limit criteria may vary from one college to another. Generally, the upper age limit is 25 years. In other words, a candidate must not be more than 25 years of age at the time of enrollment.

Physical and medical standards

In order to be considered eligible for admission, a candidate must be physically and medically fit as per the guidelines set by DGS. A medical examination will be carried out by a DGS-approved Doctor (during the selection process) to check whether a candidate is physically and medically fit or not. A candidate’s eyesight must be 6/6 without external aids. The maximum power permitted is +or-2.5. Candidate must not be color blind.

B.Sc. Nautical Science course is 3 years long.
