The number of Engineering branches have increased much in the last 10 years. There are so many new branches of Engineering being introduced that students are confused about which one to select! But what about the top Engineering branches? Wait, we will get to that point soon. The standard of Engineering graduates who pass out each year has also decreased substantially. This is due to the increased number of private Engineering colleges and increased number of seats.
Many of the Engineering graduates I know don’t even know to speak English properly. Many of them don’t know how to write a letter or application. It is funny how they pronounce certain words. You might be thinking why I’m telling all this stuff, which is not related to top 5 Engineering branches. Well, just look at the sorry state of our education.
Nowadays, just having an Engineering degree doesn’t guarantee you a job (with decent salary)! Look at those IT graduates who passed out from average ranked colleges. Many of them are still unemployed. They are forced to take up low salary jobs. Why does this happen? Well, they selected the wrong college and the wrong course. Yes, selecting the wrong Engineering course can land you in serious trouble. Now, if you have a degree in IT Engineering from a reputed college, you may easily bag a good job. But is different when it comes to average ranked colleges.
So, it becomes necessary to choose the best Engineering branch if you can’t make it to a premier college. This list is all about the top 5 Engineering branches available in India. If you want guaranteed job after graduation, then you must make sure that the course which you select is among the top and the best ones.
Here are the top 5 branches of Engineering. The list is in no particular order. I’ve formed this list after discussing with Engineering graduates of various branches from different colleges (top institutes to bakwaas ones). Go through the list:

NEW JOB ORIENTED ENGINEERING BRANCHES (2016 UPDATE)-
They say that to stay ahead of competitors in the job market, one should act smart right from college days. I say that one has to take smart decisions even before choosing an Engineering branch! For example, have you guys even thought about the immense saturation that Engineering field has been undergoing?
If you haven’t given it much thought, do think about it now. As I told before, the increase in number of colleges has increased competition in the job market by pumping up the numbers of Engineering graduates.
The smartest way to stay ahead of the crowd is by getting admission in a premier Institute! Some of us manage to accomplish that task. But the vast majority of above average, average and below average students end up in mediocre and low quality institutes. In order to get into a premier engineering college, one must crack relevant engineering entrance test(s).
Another way around is to have sublime skills and passion about that particular field of Engineering. Take for example the stories of illustrious College dropouts like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg etc. They were talented and skillful, so, college Degree didn’t mattered at all to them! If you belong to the same mould as them, worry not about the college!
But the most practical solution, in case of mediocre students is to select the Engineering branch to pursue wisely! The key is to select a less saturated branch. A branch that promises good job opportunities and less competition by the time you graduate!
I’ve assembled a list of Engineering branches that are very less saturated. A good number of them are related to Agriculture field. They are less opted by students and less popular. But job opportunities are available in abundance in both Government and Private sector, when it comes to these branches. Let’s start the list-

This is roubiga ! Thank u sir. This is so useful for a student who is confused to select his course. I am also confused but after seeing it I have an idea.
A kind mention : there is a spelling mistake in words ( wrong and different).
Don’t mistake me sir I just want to say, because a good idea should not have any errors. Once again thank you for this clear explanation. If I have any doubts can I ask you sir?
Glad that you found the article helpful Roubiga! Thanks for pointing those mistakes out. Right now I’m depending on my mobile to maintain this blog. And editing article is a bit tough while on mobile. Will get the mistakes corrected one I have my laptop in my hands! Go on and ask doubts.
Hello sir can you tell me which are the top branches of engineering as i am confused with it i like cs but also arospace….
Nikhil, Instrumentation and Control is a good branch. So are Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engg. Chemical Engineering is also promising. Your choice is also good, provided you pursue course from a reputed College. Wish you all the best!
I am curious as to the state of employment for engineers in India? As a civil engineering student, I am constantly aware of the great growth and industrialization in India, and wonder if there are many western engineers there?
Civil Engineers are able to find jobs easily, especially in Gujarat state of India. There are western Engineers working here. Especially in the petroleum Industry.
I have taken chemical engineering in self financing college.now i have recieved the call letter for bds.i am confused what to do?plzz help me out.thanks in advance
Blessy, both courses are good. But consider the quality of the college and then make a decision. Also, give importance to your personal interests too.
I have completed my 12th.I would like to take chemical engineering. But my mother says to take Instrumentation and control IC. Which will be the best?Which has the good scope?
Blessy, both are awesome branches. Both offer good job scope and opportunities. I’ve had many IC friends, who managed to bag good jobs with ease. And regarding Chemical Engg, I must say that it is more or less an Evergreen branch! Again, both are awesome branches. Go forward with the one you are passionate about.
i am really interested in programming and want to take up BTech in computer science…
only one ques is arising in my mind about its market value….will the market be alright and will i get a good job after 5 yrs
See Arindam, market value is a crucial factor. And I must say that the fortune of CS branch has been fluctuating. I must say that it has recovered to an extent since recession drama.
Also, I would like to add that lot depends on your passion and aptitude. From your query, I can see that you have a genuine passion towards Computer Science. In that case, go on with it! Just make sure that you get admission in a reputed college, with good ranking and placement record. All the best!
Sir please help me! I am intrested in chemicals.
so i took chemical engineering but my parents are saying that there is no demand for that branch. Is it true?
And also please tell me what companies are there to recrute chemical engineers?
Alisha, that’s rubbish! Chemical Engineering has got good scope! I have many friends who have landed good Government and private jobs after completing Chemical Engineering! All you need to do is work hard and prove that you have good aptitude! Many chemicals related companies directly recruit Chemical Engg graduates. Also, government players like ONGC recruit them. Some other big firms are- Indian Oil Corp, Cement manufacturing companies etc. My point is that job opportunities are available in abundance, for Chemical engg grads!
From your view which is the best and have a great future mechanical or computer science?
Dominic, Mechanical Engineering is a core branch, an evergreen one, talking from job scope’s point of view. So, for me that is better one. However, CS is not bad. Given that you do CS from a good college and have good skills at it, you can succeed and have a great career.
pls say me at present EC or CS or IS which is best to choose for my bright future pls make me clear abt my decission
Lakshmi, go for IC (Instrumentation and Control) if possible. EC is also good. It all depends on the college from which you do the course.
what is your opinion about the course of Information and Communication Technology(ICT)??
This course is combined course of Computer Science(CS) ,Information technology(IT),Electronics and Communication(EC) and User Centred Design(UCD).
So, take an admission in this course beneficial or not in your point of view???
Hi Parth, personally, I’m not aware of this course. But from what you said, it seems promising. Since it is a good combination of many different branches, it does seem to be pretty valuable. I suggest you to ponder over it with teachers and reach a decision. For me, it sound a good course. 🙂
sir … iam intrested in mechanical branch but … calculas , trignometry is my weak point . and iam also intrested in computer science but my family members are asking me to go with core branch …. and they are saying IT sector dont have good job apportunities ,,,,,, so what should i do ???…..
Shreenath, if you believe that you can excel in computer science, do that course. But do it from a reputed college. Or else, going on with the core branches is also good.
Whats the scope of CSE in india?
Riya, CSE has scope, provided that you are doing the course from a good college.
Can we get Gov. job in Ahmedabad???
Hi Aaron, sure you can. All you need to do is to go through various newspapers and classifieds and look for such jobs.
Is there any scope of chemical enginnering in gujarat???
Yes Aaron, there sure is scope, especially in chemical industries across Gujarat.
did bio medical engineering have scope in india
Hi Gokul,
Sure, that course has good scope, especially in research field! 🙂
It is good sir.
But can U tell me which is more interesting and higher job opportunities among the aeronautical and the marine engineering.
I have completed diploma in mechanical engineering but I don’t want to take it in degree.
Thank U sir.
Not much knowledge about aeronautics, bor. But I can assure that there are many good marine course teaching institutes. They offer certificate, diploma and degree courses.
