More and more students in India are opting for Engineering course after completing their 12th Science schooling. I’ve mentioned before that while this is a good trend, the massive increase in the number of takers for Engineering programs has also resulted in many branches being overly saturated, looking from job market’s point of view! Thus, in today’s age of cutting edge competition, it has become necessary to search and select Engineering branches that are job oriented as well as having very low saturation levels. A good way to do this is by selecting relatively new Engineering branches. In this article, I will be sharing details about one such branch- Motorsports Engineering. It is a relatively new entrant, in case of India! In this article you will find basic course details, eligibility criteria, scope and career prospects.
Let us start off with the basic course details. We will check out what Motorsport Engineering is all about and the main subjects covered in this program.
Motorsport Engineering: Basic details
It is a 4 years long Undergraduate level program. Students will get BE/B Tech Degree on completing the course. ME/M Tech programs are also available in the same discipline, if one wants to go for higher studies after Graduating in this discipline.
In the past, Automobile and Mechanical Engineering were enough to cater to the needs of Motorsport Industry. But, with time, it became necessary to have a dedicated Engineering field to cater to the needs of Motorsport sector. Thus, Motorsport Engineering field was born.
Thus, it is safe to say that this branch has elements of Mechanical as well as Automobile Engineering in it. Still, Motorsport Engineering is more like a specialized field, focusing more on the needs of Motorsport sector, catering to its needs using concepts of Mechanical as well as Automobile Engineering fields!
Some of the important subjects covered in this branch are-
- Mathematics
- Basics of Electrical Engineering
- Fluid Mechanics
- Engineering Mechanics
- Graphics and Design
- Stress Analysis
- Engineering Dynamics
- Material Engineering
- Automotive Electronics
- Control Technology
- Microprocessors
- Automotive Engines
- Chassis Engineering
- Vehicle Aerodynamics
- CAD
- Motorsport Vehicle Performance
- Vehicle Crash Engineering
- Racing Engine Design
- People Management, Team Management and Strategic Management
Those were some important topics that one will come across, in the program. Please note that I’ve not listed all the subjects. From the above list, it is evident that this branch focuses on the needs of Motorsport field.
Let us check out the eligibility criteria that one needs to satisfy to pursue this course.
Eligibility Criteria
Students having Diploma in Automobile Engineering or Mechanical Engineering may go for this course. Other than that, 12th Science stream passed students with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main subjects may also pursue this course.
Scope and Job opportunities after Graduation
The motorsport sector is the prime recruiter. This Engineering branch focuses on that field. Graduates will find themselves fit to fill many roles in motorsport teams. Some such job posts are-
