In this article, we will have an in-depth analysis of B.E./B.Tech. Biotechnology course. It is an Undergraduate Level Bachelor’s Degree program. In this article, you will find information such as basic course details, course duration, eligibility criteria, important subjects present, courses to do after B.E./B.Tech. Biotechnology, scope and job opportunities.
Students who are interested in the field of Engineering, Technology and Biology will find this Branch attractive and suitable. It is because of the fact that this Engineering branch is a combination of both Engineering as well as Biology subjects. A course very similar to this Engineering branch is B.Sc. Biotechnology. But B.E./B.Tech. Degree has more value than B.Sc. Degree. Let us take a look at some of the basic course details as well as information about course duration.
B.E./B.Tech. Biotechnology: Basic course details
It is a 4 years long Undergraduate Level Bachelor’s Degree program. The 4 years’ duration is divided into 8 semesters, with each semester lasting a period of 6 months. During each semester, students will have to face separate sets of Theoretical subjects as well as practical lab sessions associated with those subjects.
B.E./B.Tech. Biotechnology course is all about using concepts of Biology for tweaking and modifying biological systems, cell structures, biological processes etc so that they can be used in Engineering and Technology related applications to improve and enrich various sectors such as healthcare, Food processing, Agriculture, pharmaceuticals etc and solve problems arising in these sectors.
To get a better idea about the course structure and nature of the course, please go through the list of important subjects present in B.E./B.Tech. Biotechnology program.
B.E./B.Tech. Biotechnology: Important subjects present
Only names of important subjects have been mentioned. This has been done so that readers may get a basic idea about course structure.
In case of 1st and 2nd semesters, set of common Engineering subjects are present, along with workshop session.

Apart from theory classes, most of the above mentioned subjects have practical lab sessions associated with each of them! Some of the above mentioned subjects are recurring ones, meaning that they will appear in more than just one semester.
In case of last 3 semesters, Industrial training, project work and seminars will also play a very crucial role.
Eligibility Criteria
10+2 Science stream students, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology subjects, who have passed 12th board examinations from a recognized board are eligible to pursue this course. Thus, both Biology and Mathematics group students are eligible to pursue B.E./B.Tech. Biotechnology course.
Students must also have appeared for state level entrance examination to be considered eligible to pursue this course. Eligible candidates may also avail benefits of attractive scholarships.
Courses to do after B.E./B.Tech. Biotechnology
- M.E./M.Tech. Biotechnology/Bio process Engineering/Food Biotechnology or other such relevant specializations.
- M.B.A. program.
- M.Sc. Biotechnology
Scope, Salary and Job opportunities
Biotechnology is a rapidly developing field. Many private businesses are exploring this field and heavily investing in it. It is safe to say that there are ample job opportunities for B.E./B.Tech. Biotechnology Graduates in private sector. Government sector too offers job opportunities, but not in the scale in which private sector does. Average starting salary is generally between 2.4 to 5 Lakh Rupees per year.
Some prominent industries where Biotechnology professionals may find jobs are- Pharmaceuticals Industry, Healthcare sector, Chemical Industry, Agriculture sector, Food Processing and Technology as well as Research sector. Graduates may also take up teaching job (as lecturer) after completing M.E./M.Tech. program.
