There are so many Engineering branches available out there that choosing the right one has become very difficult for Science stream students. There are the old, traditional branches available on one side. On the other side, there are relatively new branches available. Along with these branches, there are some off-beat branches available too, which, due to some reasons, remain relatively unpopular among 12th Science stream students! In this article, I will be dealing with one such branch- Agricultural Engineering. B.E./B.Tech. programs in Agricultural Engineering are offered by a number of Agriculture Universities and Institutes in India. Students find these programs unattractive and less valuable. But the fact is that this branch is highly job oriented. Particularly in an Agrarian country like India, Agricultural Engineering professionals are in demand. So, completing B.E./B.Tech. program in this branch will ensure one a good job! In this article, I will cover basic course details of B.E./B.Tech. Agricultural Engineering program, important subjects present in the program, eligibility criteria, scope and job opportunities after graduation.
B.E./B.Tech. Agricultural Engineering: Basic course details
It is a 4 years long Undergraduate program, which is fully residential. The 4 year period is divided into 8 semesters, with each semester lasting a period of 6 months. In each semester, students have to face different sets of theoretical subjects as well as practical and lab sessions.
Agricultural Engineering program combines the concepts and techniques of Agriculture and modern technology and Engineering practices. It can be said that the program is an amalgamation of more than one discipline. It is a combination of various disciplines such as- animal and plant sciences, geology, environment science, core Engineering branches, modern agricultural technology etc.
To get a better idea about B.E./B.Tech. Agricultural Engineering, let us take a look at some of the important subjects present in these programs-

Hi Sir,
My brother is studying Btech(Agri) in a college in which this course was just started. He is not feeling any future scope of this course and I could see the education quality in that college is also not as expected. We’re regretting our decision of doing this course and feeling hopeless. Can you advice us on how to proceed in studies and future opportunities for him (including Higher studies, jobs). Also is there any chances for him to come into software field.
Anitha, getting into software field would be bit difficult. Still, you may ask him to make use of programming courses and get used to that field. Another option is to select a good management course and pursue it from a reputed institute. That PG Degree could help him land good jobs in the future.
Sir. I am a student of b tech agricultural engineering. 6th sem. I am interested in going for post graduation studies but there are no coachings available for gate and other exams. Can you please suggest how to prepare for the same? Are there options available other than m tech, gre or mba?

What are the open options for me? what courses I should study, how to start this journey?
Santhosh, you could have done M.Tech. Agricultural Engineering. But the undergraduate course you done is not relevant to the field of Agriculture. So, you are technically ineligible to pursue the PG course and venture into the R&D field.
Sir i m appearing in 12th wih PCM can i
take addmision in B.tech agriculture….if
yes to please uske process bataye…..
thank-you
Nikhilesh, you may join. Just approach Agricultural Universities in your state and enquire about the admission process. Usually, it is based on merit marks that you’ll score in Board examination and Entrance test.

Vinitha, when it comes to Government sector, Food Boards (State wise as well as Central) offers the maximum number of jobs. Other that that, you will also be able to apply for other Govt jobs that demand a Graduation Degree. In private sector, Food processing industries and chemical industries have good job opportunities.
sir i have got admission in agriculture engineering .would you please tell me what is the scope of agriculture engineering and salaries in Pakistan and all over the world
Ghulam, I’m not knowledgeable about salary out there in Pakistan or other parts of the World. But I can say that the R&D sector of this field is developing fast and can help you get well paying jobs.
what are the jobs there for the agricultural engineering . Many are saying that it is an waste of taking this course is it true and my final doubt is for coming years the jobs may increase or decrease …
Akhilesh, those who are pursuing this course from mediocre institutes will find it as useless, since they will have difficult time finding a job. In India, jobs in this field will increase. Research scope abroad is good. But for getting into that sector, you must pursue this course and its advanced formats from a reputed institute.
Sir i am pursuing B.Tech in Agricultural engineering. Currently i am in third year. I want to study further. What are other options besides GATE for M tech? Also i am specifically interested in studying M. tech in farm power and machineries. Could you please suggest some good colleges for the same?
sir i am going to complete my 12th… i want to take btech.agriculture ,,but please tell me which is important bsc or btech ? and many are telling that btech agriculture nowadays is being of no use ..is that true ?
Vimal, for mediocre students, passing out from mediocre Institutes, scope may be dull. But overall, it is a decent Branch is you have right aptitude and skills.
Sir I’m pursuing graduation from agricultural engineering branch .its my first year…form IGKV Raipur…n I’m in deep thought… That what will I do in future… What’s scope for…me ..
And one thing is that ,there no one guider, who guide me about my future.. Some people s says that there is no scope for agricultural engineering… N besides some says . it has scope only in govt. Sector ….
Plz sir help me…
I’m lived in village. N in my surrounding no one hv idea about this branch…..plz…plz…sirrr
Sohit, it is true that there is more scope in Government sector and less scope in Private sector. My first suggestion for you would be to prepare hard and land a Government job. Otherwise do advanced courses like M.Tech./MBA etc. With further qualifications, employers will value you more. Take a look at management courses offered by Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Bangalore and other similar Institutes.
Sir I have completed PCB with Mathematics in CBSE board. Now how should I join in Agricultural Engineering?
Rohit, State Wise admission process will take place (based on merit marks) take part in that and set your College preference as per required branch (Agricultural Engineering).
SIR,I am studying in SYB.TECH(Agril. Engg.)…is there more scope in India than abroad…and what are more opportunities from this Field??
Akash, in India scope is there. But the field is still evolving. Abroad, there is immense scope in the R&D sector related to this field.
What are the job prospects after doing B.Tech. or B.SC. in agriculture in India and abroad. Is prospects better than engineering in- other streams(Mechanical, civil etc.). What are the prospects and vacancy in government and private sectors. Are every graduate recruited. Please advise.
Abhijeet, Core Branches would be better than Agriculture. Still, Agriculture field is scope filled. Research and Development sector associated with it is good abroad. In Government Sector, Agriculture Boards, Food related Authorities etc offers jobs.
I want to do my own business in agriculture field and I am 12th pass from science stream. What should I do?
You may go for Agricultural Engineering or B.Sc. in Agriculture. After that, you may do MBA to add some management skills to your skill set.
I am a degree final year student in agricultural engineering.how can i know the vacancies and how to prepare to clear the exams
Nikunja, you may take help of employment news and similar publications. Also, vacancies and recruitment drives are announced via official websites such as State wise PSCs etc. You should keep an eye on such sources to get the required details.
Sir i m appearing in 12th wih PCB can i take addmision in B.tech agriculture….if yes to please uske process bataye…..than you
Amit, you are eligible to pursue Agricultural Engineering course. You’ll have to appear for State and/or National level entrance test and take part in admission process at Agricultural Colleges.
I am agricultural engineer having a 7 years of experience in this stream. I want to go abroad for working. What is the process please tell me.?
Deependra, an advanced Degree in the same field would have made things easier. Anyway, you may look up for jobs abroad on job portals and apps.
I give the h.s exam in this year..so after that I want to go for agriculture engineering… So what can I do??
Sourav, if you have appeared for State wise entrance examination, you may take part in Admission process and try to get seat in Agriculture Engineering program.
How to apply for job in foreign countries after b. Tech in agriculture
Balram, you will have to watch out for Recruitment drives and Interview Invitations and then apply for them.
