Commercial Pilot Training aspirants have been asking me questions related to educational qualifications required to become a Commercial Pilot. Few examples of questions that they have been asking me- “Is Graduation required to become a Commercial Pilot?” “Is Bachelor’s Degree required to undergo CPL training?” “Do Airlines only recruit pilots who have a Bachelor’s Degree?”. These questions have been posed by 12th standard students, who are not pursuing any Degree course and are interested in CPL training. Through this article, I will clear all their doubts.
Is Graduation/Bachelor’s Degree required to undergo CPL training?
The answer to this question is no! To pursue Commercial Pilot training in India, the minimum qualification required is 10+2 passed with Physics and Mathematics as main subjects. One must possess this qualification and must also be physically and mentally fit for flying. A pilot aptitude test will be held and one must pass it to become eligible to undergo flying training. And yes, there also will be a medical examination to check whether you are fit to fly.
It is evident from the above paragraph that Graduation/ possessing a Bachelor’s Degree is not mandatory to pursue CPL training. However, one may go for CPL training after Graduation too, since it gives one a backup plan. Like- what will you do if you couldn’t complete your CPL training (due to some reason)? If you have a Degree, you may use it to find employment!

Do Airlines recruit Pilots on the basis of Degree?
Having a relevant Degree will help you get an edge, when it comes to recruitment of pilots. Most Airlines gives preference to pilots who have a Degree in relevant fields, such as- Aeronautical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics etc. Usually Engineering and Science Graduates are given preference, while recruiting pilots. Though this is not true in case of all Airlines. You may also check – Aviation courses.
But ultimately, what matters the most is your flying record, performance (during CPL training) and the way you perform during simulation tests and interview (during selection process). Degree doesn’t always play a huge role when it comes to recruitment. Your performance and aptitude is what matters the most!
