B.Ed. in India: The story so far

B.Ed. stands for Bachelor of Education. At first, it may seem to be an undergraduate level Bachelor’s Degree course! You’re wrong! Technically, B.Ed. is a Master’s level course. It means that only Graduates are eligible to pursue this course!   In India, B.Ed. Degree is required in order to be considered eligible to teach higher secondary and senior secondary level students! This course was designed to churn out skilled HS (Higher Secondary) and SS (Senior Secondary) teachers!   NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) is the body that takes care of the quality of teacher training in India. This body looks after the overall curriculum, training methods and quality of teacher training colleges in India.   B.Ed. program trains students so that they become capable of teaching relevant subjects. For example, candidates hailing from arts stream are trained to teach subjects related to arts stream, such as – history, geography, politics etc.   Similarly, students hailing from science stream are trained to teach subjects related to science stream, such as – physics, chemistry, mathematics etc. The same formula applies in case of commerce stream students.
