B.Ed. in India: The story so far

B.Ed. stands for Bachelor of Education. At first, it may seem to be an undergraduate level Bachelor’s Degree course! You’re wrong! Technically, B.Ed. is a Master’s level course. It means that only Graduates are eligible to pursue this course!   In India, B.Ed. Degree is required in order to be considered eligible to teach higher secondary and senior secondary level students! This course was designed to churn out skilled HS (Higher Secondary) and SS (Senior Secondary) teachers!   NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) is the body that takes care of the quality of teacher training in India. This body looks after the overall curriculum, training methods and quality of teacher training colleges in India.   B.Ed. program trains students so that they become capable of teaching relevant subjects. For example, candidates hailing from arts stream are trained to teach subjects related to arts stream, such as – history, geography, politics etc.   Similarly, students hailing from science stream are trained to teach subjects related to science stream, such as – physics, chemistry, mathematics etc. The same formula applies in case of commerce stream students. Initially, it was a 1 year long course, which Graduates could pursue after completing their graduation. But the quality of old B.Ed. program was not up to the mark! The Government realized this fact and worked on the curriculum and training methods.   As a result, it came up with the new – 2 years long – B.Ed. program. It’s being said that the authorities are again planning to revamp this course’s structure!   The authorities have also introduced an integrated B.Ed. program, keeping the needs of 12th pass students in mind. Under this program, a student is taught a Bachelor’s Degree course + B.Ed.   Integrated B.Ed. course is 4 years long. For example – BA + B.Ed., B.Sc. + B.Ed. etc.

Types of B.Ed. programs in India

I’ve mentioned this topic before. But I’m mentioning it again here for the sake of my readers.   There are two main types of B.Ed. programs in India. They are –

• Regular B.Ed. (2 years)
• Integrated B.Ed. (4 years)

Eligibility

Bachelor’s Degree holders are eligible to pursue regular B.Ed. course. 12th pass students are eligible to pursue integrated B.Ed. course.

Duration

Regular B.Ed. program is 2 years long. Integrated B.Ed. programs are 4 years long.

B.Ed. program is available in two main learning modes. They are –

Admission Process

Reputed Institutes rely on merit based admission process. They allot seats to deserving candidates on the basis of merit marks scored by them in relevant entrance exam.   Some Institutes are known to conduct direct admission process. Some other Colleges are known to conduct donation based admission process too.   If you want to secure admission to a Government or highly rated Self Financed College, you must crack relevant entrance exam.

Fees

Tuition fees depends upon the following factors –

• Scholarship status of the student

Government B.Ed. colleges are known to charge a low, nominal tuition fees. On an average, SF (Private) B.Ed. colleges charge anywhere between 30-60K INR per annum.   Additional expenses such as – canteen fees, hostel fees, safety deposit etc – may also apply! PG courses
