Supply Chain Management: Introduction, Details & Scope
In simple terms, supply chain is the sequence of processes involved in the production and distribution of a commodity. Let us check out an example to understand the above mentioned statement easily. Consider the energy drink that you just can’t live without. Where do you buy it from? Usually from a grocery shop or mart. How did the energy drink reach the shop/mart? A local distributor carried/transported it to the shop from a bigger distributor. Where did the major distributor get the energy drink from? From the manufacturer. Let us talk about the manufacturer. In order to make the product (energy drink), the manufacturer had to procure and process few raw materials (chemicals, water, flavor etc). The manufacturer then processed these materials and thus the energy drink was made! The whole process – right from the procurement of raw materials (by the manufacturer) to the end of the cycle (product reaching the customer – you!) – is supply chain in action! It is a broad field and consists of aspects such as –
- Logistics management
- Inventory management
- Pricing
