EC (Electronics and Communication) Engineering

Last Updated on July 28, 2023 by Vishnu Nambiar

Electronics and Communication is one of the most popular engineering branches out there! Among Indian engineering aspirants, this discipline has been a popular choice for quite some while. In this article, you will be reading about Electronics and Communication Engineering courses available in India, course details, eligibility criteria, admission process, PG courses & further studies, career prospects and job profiles.

Electronics and Communication Engineering is also known by the short name of EC Engineering. Among engineering aspirants, it is popularly known as ‘ECE’!

EC Engineering is a combination of classic Electronics Engineering and Communication Engineering. This course focuses on electronics equipment, circuits and networks and their use in transmission of information.

The course deals with design, testing, manufacturing, analysis and research of electronic and communication circuits.

We all use mobile phones. Mobile phone is electronic equipment and we use it for communicating with others. Electronics and Communication Engineering is involved in the making of this device.

Similarly, EC Engineering is also involved in development, testing, manufacturing and analysis of devices like TV, Computers, Radio, Communication Systems, Complex control systems, Robotic systems, VLSI systems, PCB Boards etc.

ECE consists of elements of electrical engineering, computer science, control systems etc. These engineering disciplines can be said to be overlapping EC Engineering!

Communication technology and Electronics segments are evolving and developing at a rapid pace. ECE is one such discipline that heavily influences our day to day lives. Right from small household appliances to giant electronic control systems, EC Engineering is involved in key areas!

Let us check out course details now-

EC Engineering courses

In India, there are two formats of ECE course available in front of 12th passed students. They are-

  1. Diploma in EC Engineering
  2. B.E. / B.Tech. in EC Engineering

Let us check out each course format and find out vital details about them.

1 Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering

It is Diploma certificate program. Duration: Course duration is 3 years.

Usually the academic program is divided into 6 semesters. Each semester lasts for a period of 6 months. Evaluation is done at the end of each semester. The course consists of classroom lectures and practical lab sessions. In the case of final academic year, project work will also be involved.

Eligibility criteria: 10+2 passed in Science stream (with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects) from a recognized board. Minimum marks criteria may exist in case of many institutes (around 50% aggregate marks).

Admission process: Mode of admission depends on the institute. Some institutes follow direct admission process. Many institutes follow merit based admission process. Marks scored by a student in board exam and/or relevant entrance test is taken into consideration, when it comes to merit based admission process.

Further studies and PG courses: The best step ahead for Diploma holders is to go for Bachelor’s Degree program in Engineering. Using the lateral entry, deserving Diploma holders may secure admission directly in the second academic year of B.E. / B.Tech. EC Engineering program!

After completing Bachelor’s program, one may go for Master’s courses (M.Tech. or M.Sc.), PG Diploma or skill developing PG Certificate or training programs. For those who would like to pursue further advanced studies, PhD program will be of use!

2 B.E. / B.Tech. in Electronics and Communication Engineering

It is Bachelor of Engineering / Technology course. Duration: The course is 4 years long.

The academic program is divided into 8 semesters. Each semester lasts for a period of 6 months. Evaluation is done at the end of each semester. The course consists of classroom lectures and practical lab sessions. Industrial visit and training program is present in this course. In the case of final academic year, project work will also be involved.

Eligibility criteria: 10+2 passed in Science stream (with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects) from a recognized board. Minimum marks criteria may exist in case of many institutes (around 50% aggregate marks). Note: Diploma in EC Engineering or relevant discipline holders also may join this Degree program.

Admission process: Most institutes follow merit based admission process. Marks scored by a student in board exam and relevant entrance test (JEE, Institute-wise, State-wise etc) is taken into consideration, when it comes to merit based admission process. Eligible candidates may also make use of donation quota or NRI quota (depending on the institute’s setup) to secure admission.

Further studies and PG courses: After completing Bachelor’s program, one may go for Master’s courses (M.Tech. or M.Sc.), PG Diploma or skill developing PG Certificate or training programs. For those who would like to pursue further advanced studies, PhD program will be of use!
