The main task of a public health worker is to analyze the health of a population and find out the threats it faces. Based on the type of threat, public health workers usually take preventive measures, educate the population and carry out treatment of diseases.

 

The term ‘public’ in public health generally represents a part of the population. It could be as small as a residential society/community, village, town or a city!

 

Let us take a real-life example into account. During monsoon, it is not uncommon to see the outbreak of different types of communicable diseases around us. Before the onset of monsoon, public health workers plan and strategize preventive measures and plan of action.

 

They carry out preventive measures such as – cleaning of problematic areas, educating people about health hazards, visiting areas that are vulnerable to disease outbreak etc. And in case of an outbreak of a disease, public health workers assist with treatment of those affected, their rehabilitation and stopping the disease from spreading.
