Are you a CPL training aspirant? If yes, do you know what type rating is? CPL aspirants should be well aware of what type rating is and the expenses associated with it. CPL training is not a cheap process! The flying training is costly. Interested candidates often calculate CPL expenses and take loans based on the figure (fees) provided by the flying school. What they fail to add to this amount is the type rating expense, which is not a small amount! In this article, I’ve covered all the vital details related to type rating- what it is, how to get it done and expenses associated with it.

It is not uncommon to see CPL candidates who are not knowledgeable about type rating. Such candidates usually don’t know that type rating is required after completion of CPL training! They thus end up surprised, when an additional expense in the form of type rating pops up, just after they successfully completed CPL training!

Getting CPL is not the end of it! Type rating is an important process and a costly one too! Let us find more details about it –

What is type rating?

It is an airplane pilot’s certification to fly a certain aircraft type that requires additional training beyind the scope of initial license (CPL) and flying training.

Actual airplanes used by commercial airlines are way more complex than the ones used by flying schools to provide flying training to CPL students. It can be said that CPL holders must attain further training to be able to fly such more complex aircraft! Type rating is this additional training provided to CPL holders!

The training consists of ground classes, simulator training and aircraft familiarization.

Cost

Type rating certification is a costly process. The training involves huge cost. The cost depends on the type of aircraft and the airlines. On an average, it could be between 20-50 Lakh or even more. The addition of type rating cost significantly increases the CPL training cost!

Most of the airlines ask type rating training cost upfront. So, if you want to join one, you’ll have to pay them type rating cost upfront and complete the training!

Some airlines have different policy. They recruit CPL holders and bear expenses of the candidates’ type rating training. Later, the cost is recovered through bonds that the pilots are made to sign!
