Application process

Here is the step-by-step application process –

1. Candidate must take the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)
2. Apply to medical school through AMCAS (American Medical College Application Service)
3. Candidates who apply will be sent a secondary application
4. Prepare the second application for review by the admissions committee
5. An interview will be scheduled
6. Candidates are to appear for the interview on scheduled date and time

In order to be considered eligible for admission, a candidate must satisfy certain conditions/requirements (educational). Let us take a close look at such minimum requirements –

Minimum educational requirements

Talking about academic background, both science and non-science majors will be considered by many medical schools. A Baccalaureate Degree is preferred while applying for admission. 90 semester hours from accredited college or university in the USA is required.   Irrespective of the major, a candidate must have pursued certain science courses. These science courses collectively form the ‘minimum requirements’. Here are those science subjects –

• General chemistry with lab (2 semesters)
• General biology with lab (2 semesters)
• Mathematics (2 semesters)
• General physics with lab (2 semesters)
• Organic chemistry with lab (2 semesters)
• English literature or composition (2 semesters)
• Humanities (2 semesters)

Note: Minimum requirements may vary slightly from one college to another. For example, here are some other relevant science subjects – genetics, biochemistry, psychology etc.

Letters of recommendation

• Letters of recommendation must be submitted to AMCAS
• Letter of recommendation or academic evaluation prepared by premedical committee (of your undergraduate college)/science faculty is preferred

Interview

Keeping the current situation in mind, the interview process will be carried out online. Most of the medical schools have decided to carry out the interview process online. Candidates will be provided the date and time of the interview.   On the specified date, they are to appear for the interview through specified platform/application/software. For a seamless interview experience, make sure that you have stable internet connection, a computer/tablet/laptop with good webcam and a well-lit room.

Medical Education

Most medical school programs last for a period of four years. The first two years are dedicated to classroom lectures/education. The following two years consist of clinical rotations. While at medical school, a candidate must apply for USMLE (US Medical Licensing Exam). He/she must get approved for this exam and take this test (part 1 and 2).   In the fourth year, a candidate must apply for residencies. For this, he/she must fill the application form and send his/her USMLE test scores, recommendations and transcripts. The matching system will match students with residency programs. After matching, a candidate may begin his/her residency.   The first year is known as ‘internship’. After completing one year, a candidate may take USMLE (Part 3) test and earn the title of ‘Physician’. After completing the residency program, a candidate may take the board certification exam and get ‘Board Certified’.
