How to become a Marine Engineer after B.E./B.Tech. (Engineering) course

In this article, we will check details regarding how Engineering Graduates may become Marine Engineers. As of now, if one wants to become a Marine Engineer, the best way to do it is by pursuing B.E./B.Tech. Marine Engineering course right after 12th Science stream schooling (with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects). But many students tend to go forward with other branches of Engineering, like- Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, EC Engineering etc. It is only after completing the UG Engineering program do they realize they want to become a Marine Engineer! Marine Engineers are well rewarded. It is one such field where adventure and seafaring is involved. While the traditional Engineering branches tend to offer typical office jobs to Graduates, Marine Engineering, with the adventurous nature of work that it brings along, stands out! Naturally, many Engineering Graduates from other branches decide to make the switch and join a course that will help them become a Marine Engineer.

The good news is that there are some good PG as well as Diploma courses, which Engineering Graduates (specific streams that I’ve mentioned here) may pursue and finally become a Marine Engineer. Marine Engineering courses to do after B.E./B.Tech (Engineering) Graduation

1 M.E./M.Tech. Marine Engineering

This is a 2 years long Post Graduate Level Engineering program. The good news is that, after completing this PG course, one may become a Marine Engineer aboard Merchant Navy ships! The bad news is that not all Branches’ Engineering Graduates may pursue this course.

Those who have completed UG Engineering program in branches such as- B.E./B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering, B.E./B.Tech. Electrical Engineering, B.E./B.Tech. Marine Engineering, B.E./B.Tech. Naval Architecture etc are eligible to pursue this course.

2 Graduate Marine Engineering course

Commonly known as GME course, it is 1 year long course. This course is aimed at training Mechanical Engineering as well as Naval Architecture Graduates to take on the skills and responsibilities of Marine Engineer!

Only candidates who have completed B.E./B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture course, with minimum 50% marks (depends on Institute) are eligible to pursue this course.

3 Post Graduate Diploma course

Post Graduate Diploma in Marine Engineering is a course that B.E./B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture Graduates may pursue after completing their UG program. The course duration in case of this PG Diploma course is 1 year.

The above 3 methods are the best ones, using which, Engineering Graduates may become Marine Engineers! The above mentioned Marine Engineering courses are offered by a number of Recognized Maritime Institutes in India. Some of them are also offering attractive scholarships to meritorious students. Some Institutes even have their own Entrance and Aptitude test, when it comes to admission process.
