As I mentioned before, JNV stands for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. In simple terms, it is a system of alternate schools for gifted students in India. Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti is the organization that operates JNVs in India. It is an autonomous organization that functions under the Department of Education and Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Let us take a closer look at the education system being followed in JNVs. JNVs provide classes from 6th to 12th standards. JNVs are co-educational schools. These are fully residential schools (not your regular day-school). JNVs are affiliated to CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) board. Thus, JNV students follow the NCERT curriculum.
The main aim of a JNV is to provide quality education to talented Indian students. In order to identify talented students, JNVST examination is conducted each year. The main aim of this exam is to gauge students’ academic aptitude. Based on JNVST results, JNV seats are distributed among deserving students/candidates.
Let us talk about the origin of JNV now. It was former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who envisaged the concept of starting a JNV in each district to help talented students get access to quality education. As a result, it was decided to start a JNV in each district as a part of the National Policy on Education, 1986.
