IRCTC Cancelled E-ticket’s Refund Time

The official site for booking Indian Railway’s e-ticket is www.irctc.co.in. IRCTC stands for Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation. Here, we will be talking about the process of booking an e-ticket on IRCTC site, the process of cancelling an e-ticket and the refund time taken by IRCTC.

Getting started on IRCTC

To book an e-ticket, you have two options. Either go to a travel agent or register yourself on the site. If you regularly use the internet and have a credit/debit card, I recommend that you register on IRCTC. The process takes less than 10 minutes. This site is used by millions of Indians each day. Money transactions are made by hundreds of thousands of people. After registering, you will be provided a username and password. You may later log-in to IRCTC and change the default password.

 

Booking an E-ticket

If you know how to surf around on the Internet, I bet that you’ll have no trouble booking an e-ticket on IRCTC. After logging in, you’ll find a ‘quick book’ setting. It basically asks for you to fill fields like- ‘from station’, ‘to station’, ‘date of journey’, ‘quota of booking’ etc.

 

After filling the necessary fields, click on ‘search trains’ option. IRCTC will retrieve the list of trains satisfying the conditions set by you. Now, select the train and class that suits you best and click on ‘book ticket’. Next, you will be asked to fill details of passengers like name, age, sex, berth preference etc. After filling the details, the next step is to make the payment.

 

Making online payment on IRCTC

Many people doubt the concept of making payment online. But making payment on IRCTC is very safe. There is no reason to worry! You may make payment using credit or debit card. On the site, you’ll see list of banks and types of cards (visa, master card etc). If your bank is not on the list, you may use the payment gateways of other banks. It is perfectly safe to do so.

 

While making payment, you’ll be asked details like- card number, expiry date, name on card, PIN etc. After filling the necessary information, click on ‘ok’. You’ll be taken to a secure gateway for making payment. While this process takes place, never click ‘back’ or ‘refresh’ buttons. After the process completes, click on ‘pay’. That’s it, the payment process is complete. You will receive notification from your bank via SMS regarding the payment.

 

After making the payment, you’ll be redirected back to IRCTC, where you will be able to see your e-ticket. You may now print the e-ticket. You’ll also get an SMS format of the ticket sent to your mobile phone.

 

Now, let us come to the main point of our article. Here, we will discuss topics like cancelling e-ticket, process of refunding and the time taken for refunding.

 

Cancelling Process, Refunding and the time taken for Refunding

For cancelling e-ticket, you have to use the ‘cancel ticket’ option that you’ll find on the IRCTC site after logging in. As far as e-tickets are concerned, the refund process is automatic. The money will automatically be credited to your bank account. If your e-ticket was not confirmed at the time of booking and doesn’t get confirmed even after the chart has been prepared, the money will be refunded automatically to your account.

Time taken for refund to get credited in bank account

If I cancel a ticket today, it usually takes a day to ‘confirm’ the cancellation. Next, the refund will be made. All this takes between 2-4 days. But for the money to reach bank account, more time is needed! Sometimes, for the refund to get reflected in bank account, as much as 6-8 days are required. As per my experience, the refund process of IRCTC may take between 4-10 days. In some cases it may take more time!

    I cancelled two tatkal tickets from New Delhi to Indore on 10 feb 2018.
    The mail i got after cancellation is below which stated that i will get the refund shortly but till now after 7 days I have not got the same.
    Please no the needful.
    The mail is as below :

    Dear Customer,

    We wish to inform you that your ticket against PNR Number: 2********0 has been cancelled successfully as per your request. The refund amount of Rs. 990 will be refunded back to your respective account shortly

  6. I have cancelled my confirmed e ticket on 29th dec 2017 and till today that is 25 jan 2018 the amount is not credited in my account but the status is showing that amound is refunded.. What should i do now as the customer care is not responding.

  7. I have filled a TDR on 7th November 2017 it has been more than 70 days i haven’t received my money bank . However my refund status is showing sent to bank but still my account is not credited.

    I am MUKUND KUMAR,
    I booked my ticket in 29th Dec. 2018 and it cancelled it due to fault booked large no. Of waiting list(WL) TIckets in saket express fromm ltt to sultanpur of two person. Of
    I do these booking transaction with SBI DEBIT CARD AND PIN. AMOUNT REFUND 1130₹ WITH EXCLUDED 120₹ CANCELLED CHARGE.
    Now it shows status sent to bank. But problem is My SBI BANK ACCOUNT doesn’t reflect any refund amount deposited or refunded from irctc..

    Pnr no. Of that was. 8********9

    Sir, I only want to know from yr experience that how to get money refunded from this situation. When status shows SENT TO BANK but not deposited in my bank…

  10. Hi, i have booked ticket on 12/14/2017 PNR 4********9 now the status is WL4, tomorrow at 11.40 am train will move, will be my ticket confirmed.
    Also i have booked Tatkal for tomorrow for the same train PNR 4********0 status is WL10, which one will be confirmed first, so that i can cancell one ticket, please let me know

    Recently I have tried booking my tickets from IRCTC login online payment through debit card.
    Money got deducted but I didn’t get the tickets .
    I had faith that there must be some payment gateway issue and I did my tickets again and same thing happened.
    Also I have not yet received my money in my account . I am waiting since long now !

  17. Sir, i have Rupay debit card issued by bank of maharashtra, so i have used kotak mahindra bank as a gateway, irctc refunded my money on 27-4 but untill now no amount is deposited in my account. Please give more information. Thank you

    • Lucky, personally I haven’t ever paid via mobikwik or paytm. So don’t know the exact procedure of refund in those cases.

    I have cancelled e-ticket on 12-4-16 & travelling date is 17-4-16 . Again I booked a ticket for 16-4-16 but I didn’t get any booking confirmation message from IRCTC ; also when ammount will be refunded to my account ??

    • Supriya, I’m not sure why booking confirmation didn’t came. Refund usually takes 4 working days to get credited back to bank account.

    • Shashank, if you booked and cancelled the ticket online, the refund process will be automatic. The refund will be credited back to your account.

    I have booked a 2AC ticket through AXIS BANK CREDIT card.
    the ticket is confirmed now i want to cancel the ticket , I am sure that refund will be credited to my account because i am using IRCTC from past 10 years. The thing is now am not using the AXIS BANK CREDIT card where will be the cancelled amount get credited if i can cancel the ticket. is there any provision to give the other bank account details so the i can get the cancelled amount.

Sir I BOOKED my ticket by icici gate way on 30.12.15 But it was not booked but the amount deduct from my account and thereafter the refund status showing on 31.12.15 that refund back to the bank. i just want to know that they refund my payment automatically in my account or i have to visit the icici bank.

    I canceled my two Tickets on Dec-18, But amount Is not refunded yet. I checked status on IRCTC which shows “Refunded” with Transaction IDs. When can I suppose to credit that amount Into my Account OR what action can I take next ?

    • Akhil, it’ll take bit more time for that amount to reflect in your bank account. I think there is nothing to worry. Wait for a day or two. Still if the problem persists, you may contact IRCTC customer care and enquire about the status.

  38. Hi, I booked a ticket in Rajdhani for 24th December and same got cancelled as the ticket was in waiting list post preparation of chart. Normally there is an understanding that waiting ticket get cancelled automatically and post that amount gets credited into the relevant account. It’s been more than 5 days and am still waiting for the refund amount.

    • Yogesh, generally it is 4 days, but technical issues may delay this process. In that case, you may call customer care cell and raise this issue. This will help you know the exact status of the refund.

Sir I cancelled my ticket on 26.11.15 and as per irctc status it has refunded on 02. 12.15 but refund is not credited in my account I booked the ticket using icici gate way and payment made from uco bank debit card. Similarly I cancelled two ticket on 04.12.15 status shoping refunded on 05.12.15 in these booking I used hdfc gate way but refund in this case also not credited in my account please suggest me wat I can do

    • B N Meena, I’m not sure about the technical issues related to Payment Gateways, sorry about that. The best way to solve it is by contacting IRCTC and Bank customer cares.

    • Prashant, this is normal. You cancelled on Saturday. Don’t count Sunday. Only consider working days. It could take 2 more days, I think.

    • Kiran, not sure about Paytm. But in case of booking through IRCTC, it takes 2-4 working days. So it has to be around this period only, I suppose. If not refunded, you may contact Paytm or IRCTC’s customer care.

    • Timirbaran, if the agent paid for it through his bank account, the amount will be refunded to his account only. You’ll have to ask him about the refund status. Usually, it is refunded in 2-4 working days.

    • Sajid, money will be deposited in your account. It could get delayed, but money will be deposited for sure. Keep checking your bank balance after the time specified in the article.

  60. PAYMENT FOR BOOKING IN IRTC IS IMMEDIATE WHY IT TAKE SO MORE TIMES FOR REFUND WHILE CANELLED IT. IT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED BY IRTC AUTHORITY. THEY ONLY KNOW GETTING MONEY FROM PEOPLE AND NOT READY TO REFUND THE CANCELLED MONEY. MONEY OF PEOPLE IS SAME TO OWN MONEY.. IT SHOULD BE DEEPLY CONSIDERED.

    • In my experience, using a CITI Bank card leads to a refund within hours of cancellation. Using an AXIS Bank card, the experience has been different. Could it be that the delay is caused not by IRCTC but by some of the payment gateways?
