Welcome to the second post of the series named ‘Sailor entry recruitment of Indian Coast Guard’. In the previous post, I described in detail about Indian Coast Guard’s Yantrik post recruitment. In this article, I will be dealing with the post called Navik (General Duty). I will cover basic details about the post, eligibility criteria, age limit, educational and physical standards required, eyesight requirement and selection process.
Navik (General Duty) post: Basic details
Only unmarried Indian male candidates are eligible to apply for this post. After getting selected, they General Duty Naviks may specialize in disciplines such as- Mechanical Engineer, Seaman, Communication, Electrical and Aviation.
Also, one may rise through the ranks- Navik, Uttam Navik, Pradhan Navik, Adhikari, Uttam Adhikari, Pradhan Adhikari, depending upon one’s performance.
Age Limit
Candidates between 18 to 22 years of age are eligible to apply for this post. Age relaxation in case of SC/ST candidates is 5 years and in case of OBC candidates is 3 years.
Educational Qualifications
10+2 Science stream schooling with Physics and Mathematics subjects is required. Minimum 60% marks in the above mentioned subjects are also required. Relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks is give to SC/ST candidates, sportsperson of National Level as well wards of Indian Coast Guard personnel deceased while in service.
Medical Standards
Minimum height required- 157 cm. Weight should be proportionate to height. Eyesight requirements- 6/6 and 6/9 (good and bad eye respectively). Candidates using glasses are not eligible to apply. Candidate must also possess normal hearing ability.
Selection Procedure
The application process is an online one. When the advertisement is put out, candidates should visit the site- joinindiancoastguard.gov.in and apply online. While doing this task, candidates will be asked to enter basic personal details and will be asked to select an examination centre.
Candidates who are found to be eligible will be called up to appear for written examination at the selected examination centre. This call up is made on the basis of the marks scored in the 12th board examination.

The written test is of objective question type. Questions on topics such as- General Knowledge, Mathematics, Current Affairs, Chemistry, Physics, English etc are asked in the written exam.
Candidates who manage to clear the written exam are then called to appear for the Physical Fitness Test. The Physical test consists of tasks such as 1.6 km run (to be completed in 7 minutes), 20 squat ups and 10 push ups.
Finally, the candidates who have cleared the Physical Fitness Test are then subjected to Medical test. In order to get selected for training, a candidate must clear this medical test also. The final selection of candidates for training is based on the scores obtained by them in written exam, physical and medical tests.
