IIT JAM 2023: Updates, Application, Dates, Syllabus, Eligibility & Result

Indian Institute of Technology Joint Admission Test for MSc (IIT JAM), is an online all-India entrance exam conducted on behalf of Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India. This exam held by the prestigious institutes, such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and IISc every year on a rotational basis. This exam was started in the session of 2004 – 2005, and it offers admission in reputed institutions for the course of Master of Science (MSc), integrated Ph.D. course (MSc + Ph.D.), or in any other post-graduation courses. This exam is conducted in February of every year, and all the processes such as registration, issue of admit card, entrance exam, result declaration, etc.

 

This exam is a blessing for those who want to pursue their master’s degree from IITs or IISc. Through this post, we have share essential topics including exam preparation, important dates, syllabus, eligibility, fee structure, results, etc.

 

IIT JAM 2023 Eligibility Criteria

Like any other entrance exam, this exam also has some eligibility criteria which a candidate must be able to fulfill if he/she wants to appear in the exam. So, it is advised for a candidate to check the required criteria before applying as failing this might lead to the canceling of application. This exam is open for international students, so it is more competitive for Indian students to compete with them.

 

The mentioned criteria for JAM 2023 will give the candidate a fair idea to check their eligibility:

• The candidate must have completed their graduation in Bachelor of Science (Bsc.), or appearing for the final year.
• It is necessary for the candidate to score at least 55% marks during their graduation for general and OBC categories students.
• SCs, STs, and PWD students are benefited due to the reservation as the minimum required score for them is 50% in graduation.

 

Minimum Educational Qualification

The minimum required qualification and score vary based on the test paper and academic programmes. The below list will show the mandatory subjects in graduation and intermediate for a master program for different institution:

 

M. Sc. Biotechnology (IITI, IITB, IITR)

• There are no any mandatory subjects in a degree program for all of these institutes.
• Mathematics is compulsory to take admission in IITB and IITR in 10 + 2. IITI offers admission to students without any such obligation.

 

M. Sc. – Ph. D Dual Degree in Environmental Science and Engineering (IITB)

• The important subjects for this programme are any of the Biology / Biotechnology / Chemistry / Mathematics / physics during graduation.
• Mathematics is necessary for Intermediate for this programme.

 

M. Sc. Chemistry (IITB, IITD, IITG, IITGN, IITH, IITI, IITK, IITM, IITP, IITR, IITRPR)

For admission to this academic programme, chemistry and mathematics are must in graduation and Intermediate respectively.

 

Joint M. Sc. – Ph. D in Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences (IITBBS)

• Mathematics and physics are compulsory for this academic programme in IITBBS. Apart from that this institution also demands any subject among Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Computer Application, Geology or Statistics as mandatory for admission.
• There are no any necessary subjects in intermediate as an eligibility criterion.

 

M. Sc. Applied Geology (IITB, IITR)

• Geology is the mandatory subject to be eligible for this programme, along with any two subjects among Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biological Sciences at the graduation. It needs mathematics as compulsory in 10 + 2.

 

Joint M. Sc. – Ph. D in Geophysics and Geology (IITKGP, IITBBS)

Geology is compulsory subjects for this programme along with Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. It also demands Mathematics as a part of the required subject in Intermediate.

 

M. Sc. In Economics (IITR) and M. Sc. Mathematics (IITB, IIITD, IITGN, IITI, IITJ, IITK, IITM, IITP, IITRPR), and Mathematics and Computing (IITG)

Mathematics is a compulsory subject in graduation for taking admission in a master’s programme in the above-mentioned institutes, while it not require any mandatory subjects during 10 + 2.

 

Joint M. Sc. – Ph. D in mathematics (IITBBS, IITKGP), and Operation Research (IITB)

The mandatory subjects for this programme are anyone among Mathematics and Statistics.

 

M. Sc. Physics (IITB, IITG, IITGN, IITH, IITI, IITJ, IITK, IITM, IITP, IITR, IITRPR) and M. Sc. – Ph. D Dual Degree in Physics (IITK)

The mandatory subject is anyone between Physics and Mathematics to get eligible for this course.

 

M. Sc. Astronomy (IITI)

The mandatory subjects for this programme are either Physics and Mathematics or any Degree in Computer Science, Mechanical, or Electrical engineering.

JAM 2023: Important Dates

The process of application of this exam is through online process. So, the candidates who are interested in this exam need to register themselves on the crucial dates. We are sharing important dates and events regarding this exam so that you are well aware of all the details.

• Online registration and JAM application on the official website – 1st Week of September 2020.
• Closure of filling application submission and uploading of documents – 2nd week of October 2020.
• Last date of payment via online mode – 2nd week of October 2020.
• Downloading date of admit card – 1st week of January 2023.
• IIT JAM 2023 entrance examination date – 2nd week of February 2023.
• Declaration of result date – 3rd week of March 2023.
• Submission of application form for admission on JAM website – In the month of April 2023.

 

JAM 2023 APPLICATION FORM

Just like any other online entrance examination, a candidate must have to submit an application form fulfilling all the required details like name, address, documentation, photo, signature, etc.

 

All the required process of the application form, starting from the registration process on the official website of the JOAPS to the submission of all the documents.

1. A candidate needs to start by first registering themselves on the official website of the JAM 2023 by giving the important details including name, email id, password, etc. An  enrolment number is sent to the candidate’s email id after the successful registration process.
2. Through the enrolment id and the password, a candidate has to log in the JOAPS portal where they can be able to complete all the formalities of the application form.
3. Following ID card can be used for personal information:
   • Passport
   • Aadhar Card
   • College ID
   • Driving License
   • PAN Card
   • Voter ID Card
   • Employee ID
4. Every applicant can choose JAM examination cities according to their preference, but the exam centre will be given to them based on the date of form submission and total no. of candidates applying from that region.
5. Be prepared with a scanned photograph of the applicant, scanned copy of the candidate’s signature and caste certificate (for OBC, SC, ST, PwD).
6. Applicant fee for the JAM 2023 exam can be paid through more than one medium. The website accepts payment through Net Banking, Debit card, or by Credit card. It is also possible to pay the application fee by E – Challan via State Bank of India (SBI)

 

A candidate needs to check regularly on JOAPS, or JAM online application processing system to register themselves and submit the form before the last date.

 

Application Fee

The total application fee for this exam varies based on the gender, cast, and physical disability of the candidate. JOAPS offer a flexible solution to the applicant for making the payments either online or offline.

 

The total fee pay according to the candidate’s cast and gender is discussed below:

1. Females from any category :
   • One Test Paper Fee = Rs. 750
   • Two Test papers Fee = Rs. 1050
2. SC/ ST/ PwD candidate:
   • One Test Paper Fee = Rs. 750
   • Two Test papers Fee = Rs. 1050
3. All Other Candidate (Males from General / OBC)
   • One Test Paper Fee = Rs. 1500
   • Two Test papers Fee = Rs. 2100

 

All the applicant needs to be very cautious while filling the application, and they should check all the details before making the payment as the fees would not be refunded after it is paid.

 

JAM 2023 Exam Pattern

The exam pattern is very much essential to prepare strategies to crack the exam. If the candidate has an idea about the marking scheme, duration, types and weight of question; then it became an easy task to prepare a plan for the JAM.

 

JAM 2023 is an online test which is conducted for three hours in two different sessions. The session period is divided by different test papers. The first session is from 9 am to 12 pm which includes test papers of Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CT), Geology (GC), and Mathematical Statistics (MS). Whereas, second paper is conducted from 2 pm to 5 pm in which the test papers of Biological Science (BL), Mathematics (MA) and Physics (PH) are held. IIT JAM includes 60 questions which add to total maximum marks of 100.

 

The question paper contains three different sections of different formats, i.e., MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions), MSQs (Multiple Select Questions), NATs (Numerical Aided Type Questions). There is no negative marking for both section B and section C.

JAM 2023 ADMIT CARD

The admit card of IIT JAM exam will be issued on the official website of JOAPS on the first week of January of 2023. The candidate needs to log in the JOAPS to download the admit card. Admit card is the entry ticket for the exam hall and you must not forget to bring its print out on the day of an exam. The JOAPS has mentioned it that admit card will not be posted to any candidate via post/email or through any other methods.

 

Along with it, a photo id proof is also recommended at the exam center for the face identification. The valid photo id proofs are Aadhaar Card, Voter ID Card, the front page of passport, school/college ID, etc. The admit card of JAM contains essential identification information such as name, registration number, subject code, photograph, signature, etc. So, this can be used after the exam as it can also be treated as a proof of identity. In short, this admit card should be kept safe until the end of the admission process to be on the safe side.

 

JAM 2023 RESULTS

Candidate can check their result from the online website of JOAPS in the 3rd week of March 2023. A candidate can check their score, rank, and merit list from the official site. Every applicant is allocated an All India Rank (AIR) on the basis of performance and marks scored by them in the examination. If the score of any two candidate ties, then this issue is solved by a tiebreaker process in which the one is having a higher positive mark ratio, will get the advantage. But, if the problem persists, then both of them will be awarded the same rank. An All India merit list is prepared accordingly to scored AIR and on this basis, colleges are allocated to the candidates. The merit list is also based on the total available seats in all of the categories and the candidate’s respective subjects.

 

COUNSELLING PROCESS

The counselling process is organized once after the result is announced successfully. The counselling process is completely based on the merit list. Candidates can able to participate in different colleges according to their rank in the merit list.
