I’m a die-hard fan of Inter Milan. The last season, Inter Milan lifted the Serie A title. And Romelu Lukaku played a crucial role in Inter’s title-winning campaign. This is the reason why he is my favorite footballer. And this essay is dedicated to Romelu Lukaku – my favorite sportsperson and footballer.
I’ve been playing football since my childhood. As a child, I would go to the local park and play football with my friends. When the park was closed, we would play on the street instead. In short, nothing could keep us away from playing football.
As of now, I play for an amateur football club in my neighborhood. We have practice sessions each day and play matches in the weekend. Apart from playing football, I also enjoy watching it on TV and the Internet.
EPL, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, MLS – I follow prominent leagues and tournaments closely. I’m a huge fan of Serie A. The Italian league lays adequate importance on the defensive aspect of the game. On the field, I’m a defender. And the Italian league has produced some world-class defenders such as – Maldini, Nesta, Chiellini, Bonucci, Barzagli, etc. This is the main reason why I follow this league closely.
In Serie A, my favorite team is Inter Milan. I follow the club’s matches religiously. I even follow Inter players closely. After our golden period, which ended when we won the Champions League, Inter has been going through a title drought. The title drought finally came to an end last season. And Romelu Lukaku played an integral role in that campaign. Ever since he came to Inter, this big striker has turned me into his fan! Each time I see him play for Inter, it is quite evident that Lukaku tries to give his all on the field.
In his first season with Inter, he created many individual records. He scored 34 goals for Inter in all competitions. And with Lukaku up-front, Inter came second in Serie A. Just one point separated Inter and champions Juventus.
In the second season, Lukaku was much more determined. He gave it his all in the field of Inter. Yes, it was a team effort, but one just can’t ignore the contribution of Romelu Lukaku. At last, thanks to the team’s performance, Inter ended their league title drought and won the Serie A title comfortably.
Lukaku became my favorite footballer after he joined Inter Milan. But before his Inter stint, Lukaku was a fearsome and effective striker. Before Inter, he had played for clubs such as – Anderlecht, Chelsea, West Brom, Everton, and Manchester United.
Lukaku was born in Belgium to immigrant parents. His father was a professional footballer. In short, he was introduced to the game at a very young age. He signed his first professional contract (senior) with Belgian club Anderlecht. At a very young age, Lukaku was very talented and effective as a striker. And he performed consistently for Anderlecht in the Belgian top league. This attracted attention from top clubs across Europe and Lukaku was labelled as one of the most promising and talented players in Europe.
It was EPL club Chelsea who managed to sign him. The transfer saga courted some controversy. But he made his way to Chelsea’s senior team. But his stint at Chelsea was not very rewarding. His coaches lost faith in him and he secured a move to West Brom.
At West Brom, the physical game-play suited Lukaku. They utilized him as their target man and Lukaku did very well in that role. Due to his consistent performance in the EPL, Everton decided to sign him. With Everton, Lukaku did very well in the league. He helped them secure the best-place finish in the League. He scored some crucial goals for the club.
Everton’s stint was followed by a stint at Manchester United. At United, he was unable to display his best self. This led to criticism from commentators and fans. Seeking a fresh start, he decided to join Italian club Inter Milan. And this move helped both the player and the club.
At international level, he represents the Belgian National team. I very well remember his and Belgium’s performance in the 2018 World Cup and the recently concluded Euro 2020. Though Belgium didn’t win the trophy in any of these competitions, they played some attractive football. And Lukaku was their spearhead in these tournaments.
For me, Lukaku signifies hard work, discipline, and determination. Without these qualities, he wouldn’t have made it to the top flight. Winning a title requires tremendous hard work. He has taught me that with determination and hard work, anything is possible.
