Today is Ambedkar Jayanti. Each year, 14th April is celebrated as Ambedkar Jayanti in the memory of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. He lived his life trying to uplift the condition of the dalits and the ‘untouchables’. His aim was the up-lift of these backward communities through education. He himself was born into a Mahar ( a backward class) family in MadhyaPradesh. He transformed the lives of many ‘untouchables’ through his relentless efforts.
Dr Ambedkar was born into a Marathi family in Madhya Pradesh. His father used to serve in the Indian Army then. Ambedkar was good in his studies and was the only untouchable student in his school when he moved to Bombay. He completed his matriculation and took up a job in Baroda government, which was ruled then by Maharaj Sayajirao. He was sent to America on a scholarship.
After working with the Baroda government, he tried his hands at many jobs. During this period, he faced the wrath of his colleagues, who considered him an untouchable. All this led him to fight against untouchability in India.
The constitution of India was drafted by him. He also was a member of the Rajya Sabha. After his research on the ‘Mahar’ caste, he became interested in Buddhism and converted to Buddhism.
