B.Tech. Ceramic Engineering: Basic Details

B.Tech. stands for Bachelor of Technology. It is an engineering education program. It is a Bachelor’s Degree course. Students who have passed 12th Science with PCM subjects are eligible to pursue this course.

As the name suggests, this program deals with ceramic engineering. What is ceramic engineering all about, you may ask. Here is everything you need to know about this domain –

Before check out what ceramic engineering is, let us take a closer look at the term ‘ceramic’. What is ceramic? It is a solid material comprising an inorganic compound of metal, non-metal or metalloid atoms primarily held in ionic and covalent bonds.

Examples of ceramic include – earthware, porcelain and brick. Ceramic materials may have crystalline or partly crystalline structure.

Ceramic engineering deals with the creation of objects/materials from inorganic, non-metallic materials. Ceramic materials are created using precipitation reaction from high-purity chemical solutions.

Ceramic engineering deals with aspects such as – purification of raw materials, study of chemical compounds and production of chemical compounds. It also deals with the study of formation of raw materials into components, study of their structure, properties and composition.

Due to their crystalline or partly crystalline structure, ceramic materials possess specific set of properties. These properties enable them to be used in areas such as – materials engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering etc.

Ceramic materials are used in different types of industries. Why is it so useful, you may ask. Heat resistance – a special property of ceramic materials – is responsible for this! Due to this property, ceramic materials are used in areas such as – mining, aerospace, electronics and electricity transmission. Apart from that, ceramic materials are also used in areas such as – medicine, refining, food industry, chemical industry etc.

B.Tech. Ceramic Engineering course will train you in areas such as – ceramic raw materials, mineralogy, ceramic process, metallurgy, ceramic coatings, cement and concrete, refractories, advanced ceramics, engineering materials, physical ceramics, process control, instrumentation etc.
