Are you interested in pursuing Dialysis Technology course? If yes, this article will be of help to you. Here, I’ve listed different dialysis technology courses (formats) available in India. Basic course details have also been covered here. The article covers topics like course details, duration, eligibility criteria and career prospects.
Before heading towards the ‘courses’ section, let us check out some important details about the field of dialysis technology.
In a healthy human body, kidneys are responsible for purifying the blood. As long as kidneys perform this task well, there is no need for a patient to use dialysis treatment.
Due to reasons such as kidney failure and certain medical conditions (damaged kidneys and other diseases), kidneys become unable to carry out this purification process. This is when dialysis process comes handy!
When natural purification of blood (by kidneys) stops, it becomes necessary to intervene and perform artificial purification.
Dialysis is the artificial purification process of blood. Using dialysis process, it is possible to remove waste, excess of water and other unwanted fluid from the blood of patients.
Let us check out some important tasks performed by a dialysis technician-
- Setting up dialysis machine
- Preparing sterilization mix
- Recording vital body stats of the patient (temperature, blood pressure, age, pulse rate and weight)
- Monitoring the patient
- Guiding the patient and communicating with him/her
- Administering anaesthesia (as per requirement)
- Operate dialysis machine
- Supervise dialysis process
- Calculating blood flow
- Cleaning and inspection of dialysis machine
In India, there are 3 main formats in which dialysis courses are available (talking about undergraduate level). They are-
- Bachelor’s Degree courses
- Diploma courses
- Certificate courses (technician)
Let us check each course format out and find out vital details about them-
Courses
1 Bachelor’s Degree courses
Degree courses mainly consist of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Dialysis Technology) programs. Some of the well known B.Sc. courses include-
- B.Sc. in Dialysis Technology
- B.Sc. in Renal Dialysis Technology
- B.Sc. in Dialysis Therapy
The above mentioned courses are Bachelor’s Degree courses. On course completion, graduates will be awarded Bachelor of Science Degree by the University/Institute.
Duration: Course duration is 3 years. In cases of some institutes, after the completion of academic program, there will be an internship program.
Eligibility criteria: 10+2 Science stream passed (with PCB subjects- Biology group) from a recognized board is the minimum educational qualification required. Minimum aggregate marks required (if criteria exists) is generally around 45-55% marks.
Admission process: Most institutes follow merit based admission process. Marks scored by students in board examination and/or relevant entrance test (state or institute-wise) are taken into account. Seats are allotted to deserving candidates on the basis of merit marks scored by them.
For more details, check this article out- B.Sc. in Dialysis Technology.
2 Diploma courses
Diploma certificate course is not as valuable as its Bachelor’s Degree counterpart. Still, it is a job oriented paramedical course and will help one get technician level jobs at hospitals and clinics.
Notable Diploma certificate courses include-
- Diploma in Dialysis Technology
- Diploma in Dialysis Technician
- Diploma in Dialysis Therapy
Duration: Generally the course duration is 2 years. In cases of some institutes, the academic program is followed by an internship program.
Eligibility criteria: 10+2 passed with Science stream subjects (some institutes have PCB subjects criteria) from a recognized board is the minimum educational qualification required. Minimum aggregate marks required (if criteria exists) could be anywhere between 45-55% aggregate marks.
Note: Some institutes are also known to give admission to 10th passed students.
Admission process: Depending upon the institute, it could be merit based or direct admission process. When it comes to merit based admission, marks scored students in board examination and/or relevant entrance test are taken into consideration. Seats are allotted to deserving candidates on the basis of merit marks scored by them.
3 Certificate courses
Dialysis technician certificate course is not as valued as its Degree or Diploma counterpart. Still, this course is enough to acquire key dialysis technician skills and knowledge. After completing this course, one may take up entry level dialysis technician job post.
Duration: Depending upon the institute, course duration could be anywhere between 6 to 12 months.
Eligibility criteria: 10th passed from a recognized board is the minimum educational qualification required.
Admission process: Depending upon the institute, it could be merit based admission or direct admission process.

Career prospects and job opportunities
Common job profiles available in front of Dialysis Technology/Technician graduates include-
- Dialysis Technician
- Dialysis Supervisor
- Dialysis Therapist
- Dialysis Assistant
Dialysis Technicians are hired by hospitals (Government and private), clinics, community health centres and NGOs offering dialysis treatment to patients.
They usually work under the supervision of qualified nurses and Doctors. Depending upon the qualification (like B.Sc. and M.Sc. Dialysis Technology) they may also take up better job posts like Dialysis supervisor or even Lecturer (at relevant medical or paramedical colleges).
