Is Maths Subject Compulsory To Do CA (Chartered Accountancy)?

CA (Chartered Accountant) is a very popular career path among 12th Commerce stream students. Technically, students from any stream (after 10+2) are eligible to pursue CA training. One major doubt among CA aspirants is about the involvement of mathematics subject in eligibility criteria. This article will solve your doubt.

During 10+2 schooling (any stream), some students don’t select mathematics subject. They discard mathematics and select some other optional subject. The questions that such students have in their mind are- ‘Can I become a Chartered Accountant without mathematics subject?’, ‘I didn’t had mathematics subject in 12th, Am I eligible to go for CA training?’ and ‘I’m weak in mathematics, will I be able to become a CA?’. This article has been written to clear such doubts and questions.

Eligibility Criteria

According to the rules set by ICAI, students who have passed 10+2 board examination (any stream) or any Graduation course (from a recognized University) are eligible to undergo CA training. There is no mention of mathematics as a compulsory subject.

This means that students who haven’t had mathematics subject are also eligible to pursue CA training.

Sure, mathematics doesn’t play a crucial role in eligibility criteria. But the subject sure is involved in the Proficiency Test and Final Level. To get a better idea about the involvement of mathematics subject, let us check out various stages involved in CA training.

CA training involves three main stages-

1. CPT (Common Proficiency Test)
2. IPCC (Integrated Professional Competence Course)
3. CA Final Examination

Mathematics subject and its concepts will come handy while facing CPT and CA Final. Topics like integration, derivatives, Interest (Simple & Compound) etc are involved in CPT stage. Similarly, in the CA Final stage, Financial Management too has lot to do with mathematics subject.

In short, even if you haven’t had mathematics subject during 10+2 schooling phase, you are eligible to pursue CA training. But, being familiar with the subject will sure help you in dealing with CPT and CA Final stages.
