To build a rewarding career in the field of Fashion Designing, there exists a number of courses that interested students may pursue. But among those courses, the one that holds the most value is- BFT (Bachelor of Fashion Technology). A BFT program is widely recognized and is regarded as the best among loads of certificate as well as Degree Fashion and Design courses. In this article, I will point out important course details about BFT program, subjects covered in the program, eligibility criteria, scope and career prospects.
Bachelor of Fashion Technology: Basic course details
It is a 4 years long residential program. This period of 4 years is divided into 8 semesters. Apart from theoretical knowledge, adequate importance is given to practical knowledge, internship program, field trips, projects etc.
The aim of this program is to make students familiar with the latest techniques, instruments, technology etc used in the fashion industry. The field of textiles, garments and clothing has evolved really fast and has become what the fashion industry is today. BFT program trains students so that they become well equipped, in terms of technology and methods used today in the fashion industry.
Further, students are also taught to be innovative. Workshops and practical projects are also conducted throughout the BFT program, which ensures that students are getting chance to innovate and bring forward their own style and techniques! Also, apart from the traditional designing and creation part of fashion industry, the management part of this industry is also given much importance in the BFT program. Management subjects like- marketing, finance management, merchandising, promotion and marketing etc also form an integral part of Bachelor of Fashion Technology program!
Students are also given ‘technical’ lessons regarding the working of commonly used as well as latest machinery used in the fashion sector. Entrepreneurship lessons are also given, which definitely will help students start their own venture after graduation.
Eligibility Criteria
In case of premier institutes like NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology), only 12th Science stream students (with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects) are eligible to apply for Bachelor of Fashion Technology program. They also have an entrance test, which interested candidates have to clear!

On the other hand, in case of other private institutes, 12th passed students, from any stream (Science/Commerce/Arts) are eligible to apply for this course.

The Fashion industry is one such place where you can thrive if you have the right set of skills and creativity. Job opportunities are available in ample amounts, in case of graduates. Textile mills, Garment production firms, Apparel and accessories manufacturing firms etc are the prime recruiters. Starting salary is around 15-25k Rupees per month. I have finished my 12th and now i would like to join in NIFT , as i have opted Science stream, but my subjects were physics, chemistry and biology. I have not opted for mathematics, if that is a problem I would like to know it as soon as possible.
