This discipline deals with aspects such as – fire safety policy, fire safety planning, fire safety training, fire hazards and more. Fire and safety technology is not just about fire-fighting. Fire and safety technology domain is not risk-free. Many colleges have strict physical and medical standards/requirements, which an applicant must meet. These conditions may vary from one college to another. Here are some such basic requirements –

- Minimum height – 5 foot 5 in

Fees
Tuition fees may vary from one college to another. Primarily, it depends upon the type of college (government or private). I’ll talk about private colleges in this post. A diploma course can set you back by 30-90K INR per year. On the other hand, a Degree course (like B.Sc. or B.Tech.) may set you back by 50-150K INR per year. Apart from tuition fees, a candidate must also pay other expenses such as – deposit fee, hostel fees, canteen fees, library fees, exam fees and more.
Admission Process
Reputed institutes rely on merit based admission process. Under merit based admission process, seats are distributed among deserving candidates on the basis of their performance in relevant board exam and/or entrance exam. Some institutes may even conduct a selection interview for checking the candidate’s aptitude. Some colleges are also known to conduct donation based admission process.
Career Prospects
Skilled fire and safety professionals are in huge demand today. They have access to government as well as private jobs. They may even become self-employed. For example, they may start a fire safety consultancy and become self-employed. Let us talk about government jobs first. Some of the key government sector recruiters include – fire department (state-wise), ONGC, IOCL, Cochin Refinery, Indian Railways, State travel departments, Central Government chemical plants, Government operated power plants and more. Let us talk about the private sector recruiters now. Private refineries (like Essar and Reliance), private chemical plants, private constructors etc are known to hire fire and safety professionals. Job post and role largely depends upon your educational qualification. Some of the popular job roles of titles include –

Salary
Starting salary depends upon factors such as – your educational qualification, type of job (government or private), job location, employer’s scale of operations etc. For example, in case of a government job, the salary will depend on the organization’s pay scale and grade. And PSUs tend to pay better than state-run organizations. In a private sector firm, one may earn around 30-45K per month (in beginning). This is an average figure though. It may vary depending upon your educational qualifications and the employer’s scale of operations.
