Last Updated on July 31, 2023 by Vishnu Nambiar

This article will be of help to arts stream students. Here, I’ve provided information about pursuing the professional course of B.Arch. (Bachelor of Architecture) after 12th arts stream. You will be reading about possibility, eligibility criteria, entrance tests and admission process.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The CoA (Council of Architecture) has issued a new mandate. According to it, Commerce and Arts stream students won’t be able to pursue B.Arch. course in future.

10+2 Science stream (with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects) passed from a recognized board will be the new minimum educational qualification required to pursue Bachelor of Architecture course. Minimum aggregate marks required in PCM subjects are 50% (along with valid NATA score).

The new minimum standards for Architecture education will come into effect from the academic year 2018 onward. Students and readers are requested to take note of this fact!

In simple words, Architecture is the process of planning, designing and constructing buildings and other physical structures. B.Arch. is a well known professional course that trains students to become qualified Architects. It is a 5 years long undergraduate Degree course.

Arts stream students have the following doubt in their minds- ‘Is it possible for arts stream students to study Architecture?’. I’ll answer that question in the next paragraph.

Traditionally, B.Arch. has been seen as a course reserved for 12th Science stream students. But the situation has changed now! Architecture course has been made available to all, even Commerce as well as Arts and Humanities stream students! CoA (Council of Architecture) is the authority that regulates Architecture education in India. There exist some eligibility criteria though, which you have to satisfy. You will be reading those details in this article shortly.

It is possible to pursue B.Arch. course after completing 12th arts stream schooling. But you must satisfy the below mentioned eligibility criteria-

Eligibility Criteria

Candidate must have passed 10+2 Schooling in any stream, with mathematics subject, from a recognized board. Student must have scored minimum 50% aggregate marks in board examination.

This is the basic eligibility criteria- 10+2 passed with mathematics subject! Minimum marks criteria may vary from one institute to another.

Entrance tests

To secure admission in reputed Architecture institutes, one must appear for NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) test. Architecture colleges conduct admission process through this entrance test. Arts stream students may make use of it to secure admission in an Architecture institute.

Admission process

Most institutes follow the merit based admission process. Merit marks scored by students in NATA test and board examination are taken into consideration. Based on merit marks, seats are allotted to deserving candidates.

    • B.Arch. is undergraduate level course. M.Arch. is postgraduate level course. To pursue M.Arch., you must have completed B.Arch. Salary could be anywhere between 10-20K Rupees per month.
