Broadly speaking, medical colleges in India can be classified into the following types – Government medical colleges, private medical colleges and Government-Society colleges.

Government medical colleges, as the name suggests, are Govt owned institutes (State or Central). These colleges charge relatively lower tuition fees. Private medical colleges are also known as self-financing institutes. These colleges are known to charge higher tuition fees. Government-Society colleges are partly owned by the Govt.

MBBS admission process in India is facilitated through medical entrance tests. These tests are conducted at college and national levels each year!

MBBS Seats in India

These days, the participation of Private sector in the field of Education has increased a lot! Earlier, only Government Institutes used to provide Professional course programs in India. But these days, thanks to Privatization measures, number of Private Institutes offering professional courses have come into existence! The field of Medical education has also been a part of this trend. Earlier, there used to be only Government Colleges present, which offered MBBS course. Government Colleges were also very few in number back in those days.

The indulgence of Private sector in Medical Education field saw a rise during 1990s. By then, number of Private Colleges came into existence, after Government relaxed few rules and laws. As of now, in India, there are 183 Government Medical Colleges (24,935 seats) and 215 Private Medical Colleges (27,320 seats) functioning.

Government Medical College students get to enjoy some advantages such as lower fees amount, large patient influx (resulting in better practice and experience) etc over their Private counterparts! The large influx of patients is due to the fact that majority of Indians prefer treatment to be done at low cost Government run Hospitals!
