Different types of law colleges
Law colleges in Maharashtra can be classified based on the entity that owns it. Based on this factor, colleges can be broadly classified into the following types –
- Government law colleges
- Private law colleges
- Aided law colleges
As the name suggests, Government law colleges are funded and managed by the state Government. The Government takes care of aspects such as – funding, administration, recruitment, and admission.
Private law colleges are also known as self-financing colleges. They are owned and funded by private charitable trusts and organizations. They charge relatively higher fees.
Aided colleges are private institutes. They receive partial funding from the Government.
Students prefer Government colleges over the other two types of institutes. This is because Government colleges charge relatively lower tuition fees. This makes it very affordable for students and their parents. Besides that, the quality of faculty at these colleges is also very good.

Based on the academic level, law programs in Maharashtra can be classified into the following types –
- UG programs
- PG programs
- Doctoral Degree programs
UG stands for undergraduate level. PG stands for postgraduate level.
Integrated law programs, LL.B., LL.M., PG Diploma programs, PhD programs – these are some of the prominent law course formats in Maharashtra. Let us take a closer look at each course format –
Integrated law courses: These are UG-level programs. Candidates may apply for admission after completing the 12th class. BA LL.B., B.Sc. LL.B., B.Com. LL.B. – these are examples of integrated law courses.
LL.B.: It stands for Bachelor of Law. Though it may sound like a Bachelor’s program, technically it is a Master’s Degree course. Candidates may apply for admission after completing a relevant Bachelor’s Degree course.
LL.M.: It stands for Master of Law. Candidates who have completed LL.B. are eligible to apply for admission.
PG Diploma (law) programs: Candidates who have completed an LL.B. are eligible to pursue PG Diploma (law) programs.
