Last Updated on August 7, 2023 by Vishnu Nambiar

Recently, a science stream student, who had just passed 12th standard asked me a question related to joining Indian Air Force. He said he was interested in becoming a pilot! But he was confused. He was not sure whether to become a pilot in the Armed forces or to become a Commercial Pilot. It was then that I explained to him the benefits of joining the Indian Air Force and becoming a pilot there. Here, in this article, I will explain to you guys the main, important advantages of joining the Indian Air Force and becoming a pilot there, right after passing out of 12th standard.

Main advantages of joining Indian Air Force as pilot after 12th science

#1 There is a good entry scheme available

This is the main attraction. For a 12th science passed student, there is the NDA (National Defence Academy) entry. As per this entry, a student, not more than 19 years of age, can appear for the exam.

Candidates appearing for this exam has the freedom to set Air Force as their first priority. So, if they manage to crack the exam and the subsequent SSB (Services Selection Board) Interview, they can make it to the Indian Air Force as a Flying Officer.

#2 One can become pilot at low expense

When it comes to becoming pilot in the Armed Forces, the expenses are considerably low! So low that it is nothing in comparison to the expenses in the case of becoming a Commercial Pilot!

So, for aspirants who want to become pilot, and who have financial constraints, this opportunity is a boon! Such candidates should embrace this mode of becoming a pilot.

#3 An Armed Forces Pilot can later become Commercial Pilot

A flying officer in the armed forces can become a Commercial Pilot after retiring from the Air Force. To become a Commercial Pilot after retiring, no huge expenses are involved. Plus your rank will remain with you even after retiring!

Even after taking the jump and becoming a commercial pilot after retiring from Air Force, you may continue to avail benefits like pension from Government, ration schemes, perks etc. This is another attractive prospect.

    • Shantanu, take Science stream after 12th. After you are 17 years of age, appear for NDA examination. Set IAF as your first choice in that examination.
