Piping Engineering/Technical course details, duration, scope and jobs

Last Updated on July 31, 2023 by Vishnu Nambiar

These days, the competition in the job market is so high that to survive, one must possess some ‘extra’ skills other than the regular graduation Degree! Yes, the competition out there is cut throat and the job market saturation is not helping the situation either! Previously, I wrote an article listing some Industry oriented courses for Electrical Engineering graduates and students. In this article, I’ll analyze Piping Engineering and Technology course, which Mechanical Engineering students may pursue after completing their Engineering Degree course.

What exactly is Piping Engineering all about?

Pipes have always been an integral part, when it comes to Large, medium as well as small scale industries. Earlier, this whole piping saga used to be managed by Civil Engineers mostly. But with the advancement of technology, this field became more and more developed. Now, it has reached such a scale that specialization courses are also being offered in Piping Technology!

Duration of the course-

One may pursue this course after completing graduation. But if one has time to spare, this course can even be pursued while studying in the final or pre-final year of graduation program!

The course usually lasts for 1 year. But it really depends on the institute you choose. Some crash certificate courses take lesser time, like- 6 months! Whereas Diploma courses last 1 year or even more (depending on the curriculum).

Eligibility Criteria-

Mechanical Engineering Graduates are eligible to pursue this course. They may go for it after completing Bachelor’s Degree or while appearing in final year of Degree program. Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Graduates are also eligible to pursue this course. Chemical Engineering Graduates too may go for this course!

The above mentioned eligibility criteria applies in case of ‘Piping Engineering’ course. In case of ‘Piping Technical’ course, even ITI passed and 12th passed students (depending on the Institute) may pursue it!

Nature of the course-

When it comes to Piping Engineering and technology both regular classroom as well as distance learning (online) programs are available in most parts of the world. If it is from a reputed institute that you want to pursue this course from, I suggest you to go for Distance learning from a reputed Foreign Institute.

Job opportunities and salary details associated with this course-

Piping Engineers are required by almost all heavy scale industries. They are required for project planning, construction and commissioning, cost estimation, design, research and development, purchasing of materials etc.

Among various industries, the Gas, Oil, Petroleum and Chemical manufacturing/processing industries are the ones that require expert Piping Engineers the most! Pipes are used for transporting fluids from one place to another easily. And the above mentioned industries deals with fluids predominantly! Average starting salary is between 20-40k Rupees per month. This figure may vary, depending upon the profile of the employer and other Educational Qualifications of the worker.

Take for example- Petroleum refineries, they boast some of the most complex and marvelous pipeline network that manages tasks such as refining crude oil, separating petroleum products, transporting gas and petroleum from one part of the plant to another! To pull of such feats, the refinery depends on skilled and creative Piping Engineers, Technicians and workers!

Similar is the case of Chemical Industries. Based on the type of the Chemical that they are dealing with, the material of the Piping material changes! Here too, qualified Piping Engineers and technicians come handy!

So, if it is job opportunities that you are looking for, this course will provide you with ample opportunities. You may also go work in places like Middle East and Gulf Countries, where Oil refineries flourish! After gaining sufficient knowledge and work experience, one may also start Consultation service.

Basically, Piping Engineering is best suited for Mechanical or Chemical Engineering Graduates or Diploma holders. Most Institutes take only the above mentioned degree holders into Piping course that they offer. But this policy differs from one institute to another!
