I’m back with another blog post related to SSB interview and selection process of Army, Navy and Air Force of India. There are many physical demands that a candidate must fulfill to get admitted into the armed forces. Selecting such eligible candidates is the mission of SSB interview. A doubt that many candidates have is about tattoos and how they’ll affect their fate, when it comes to SSB interview, medical checkup and selection process. The question that they ask is- ‘Are tattoos allowed?’ ‘Do candidates who sport tattoos get accepted to armed forces after SSB and medical checkup?’. I’ll answer those questions here.
According to the guidelines provided by UPSC and SSB board, permanent tattoos are only allowed only on the inner face of the forearm. So, you are allowed to sport a tattoo anywhere between the inside of the elbow to the wrist.
Apart from that, one is also allowed to have a tattoo on the backside of the palm. If a candidate sports permanent tattoos on any other parts of the body other than the permitted ones, then it will result in the disqualification if the candidate. He will be banned from appearing for further selection processes also.
In case of tribes, who have tattoos on body and face, as per their traditions and customs, they are exempted and are allowed to have tattoos. The authorities will look into the matter and allow tattoos in case of those tribes.

So, in case you are going to appear for SSB interview this time and are having tattoos that are actually forbidden by SSB board, then do try to get rid of them before the interview. Better to stay alert and avoid the risk of getting disqualified from further attempts. There are some cosmetic procedures to remove permanent tattoos effectively. Make use of one such service. Hope I’ve managed to clear your doubts.

Vishwajeet, tattoo is not in the allowed region. You may face trouble during SSB Interview.

Saurabh, if it is on the inside portion, as mentioned in the article, it is okay to have it. Otherwise get it removed.

Shane, tattoos are not allowed on areas other than the specified ones. Remove the ones that are not allowed.
Sir..some candidates went there and they were saying that they used to check this tattoo issue in initial stages!
And sir permanent tattoo is taking 2-3 months for complete removal! It cannot b removed instantly!

Ambuj, maybe your friends are true. But I happened to hear that its done during medicals stage. Anyways try to get it removes ASAP.

Ambuj, usually it is during Medical test that the tattoo issue is considered. And medical tests are held after initial stages, towards the end.

Ambuj, get it removed. If you get selected, a tattoo shouldn’t become cause of your rejection.

Aalekh, as mentioned above, tattoos within inside portion are allowed. Otherwise you should consider getting it removed.

My name is shortlisted for SSB interview at Allahabad center. I am quite excited & nervous too. First time I am attempting this & I don’t have anyone like relatives, friends or any else for guidance how I can prepare for SSB. I have tattoo on my forehead and (it is a small dot of approx. 0.5 cm dia or less than it)but it was not made for fashion but when I was small my mother made it as part of our tradition and I am not belonging to tribal community. Is there any solution for it means do SSB will accept it or not? & secondly I am using spectacles with number 2.25 for long distance vision, So, please guide me in this.

I got inked after I got conference out. I was so angry and disappointed that I got myself inked. I was so well prepared, did extensive coaching and training, only to be conference out. tears rolled down my eyes, involuntarily, when I was not selected. It was 2 years back. I still consider myself better than the guy selected.
But how can one subside his dreams !!! My love for the Indian Air Force crept up once again. I want to give as many shots at it as possible now- till I get selected.
The problem is that both of my hands are inked. I read that permanent tattoos can’t be removed permanently, without scars. Can anyone tell me, if there is any safe procedure to get it removed? Anyone know of a place in Hyderabad, where I can do it?

That may be the case, Rushika. But why take risks when it can be removed? I’m suggesting this just to stay safe!
