Types of medical colleges

The list consists of three main types of medical colleges –

  • Government medical colleges
  • Private medical colleges
  • Aided medical colleges

Government colleges are funded and managed by State or Central Government. Private medical colleges are managed and funded by private charitable trusts, organizations and bodies. Aided colleges are private institutes. But they receive partial support and funding from the Government.   Among the above mentioned colleges, Government institutes are very popular among MBBS and PG medical education aspirants. It is due to the fact that these colleges charge very low tuition fees.   On the other hand, private medical colleges charge relatively higher tuition fees.

Medical courses

MBBS is the most popular medical course in India. It is an undergraduate level course. Students who have passed 12th Science with PCB subjects are eligible to apply for admission.   MBBS course is 5½ years long. The program consists of one year long internship stint. Each year, hundreds of thousands of applicants apply for MBBS admission. Only a handful of them manage to find their way into premier medical colleges.   After completing MBBS, graduates may go for higher education. They have access to PG medical courses such as – MS, MD and PG Diploma programs.

Admission Process

In order to secure a Government or merit seat, one must crack relevant medical entrance exam. These exams are conducted at State, National and College levels. A merit list is prepared on the basis of candidates’ performance in relevant entrance exam. Seats are given to deserving candidates on the basis of their position in the merit list.
