Different types of medical colleges in Kerala

Based on the entity that owns the college, medical colleges in Kerala can be classified into the following types –

1. Government medical colleges
2. Aided medical colleges
3. Self-Financing medical colleges

Government medical colleges are owned and managed by the Government of Kerala. The Government takes care of funding, recruitment of professors, staff, admission process, expenses, administration etc. Since Government handles everything, these college charge very low fees.   Medical students studying in these colleges have to pay very low fees. They also have a chance to learn under skilled faculty and practice at Government hospitals (with good flow of patients).   This is the main reason why students prefer Government medical colleges over aided and self-financing colleges.   Private medical colleges are also known as self-financing medical colleges. These colleges are owned and managed by private charitable trusts and organizations. These colleges charge relatively higher fees.   Aided colleges are private medical colleges. But they receive partial funding and support from the Government. MBBS course

MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. It is an undergraduate level medical course. After completing this course and registering with the Medical Council, a candidate may use the title of Dr (Medical Doctor).   The academic program is 5½ years long. One year of this program is dedicated towards compulsory internship. The main aim of internship is to give hands-on practical experience to young medicine graduates. Eligibility criteria is – 12th pass with PCB subjects.   The academic program will train you in both clinical and non-clinical aspects of medical science. It lays equal importance on practical training and classroom lectures.   Medical colleges also offer PG level medical programs such as MS, MD and PG Diploma programs. Admission Process

If you want a Government seat, you must take part in merit based admission process. You must appear for relevant medical entrance exam and score good marks in the exam. Medical entrance exams are conducted at National, State and College levels.   Some colleges are known to conduct donation based admission process. Some other students pursue MBBS abroad, where no particular entrance score is required.
