Types of medical colleges in Assam

There exists two main types of medical colleges in Assam –

  • Government medical colleges
  • Private medical colleges

  The classification of colleges has been carried out on the basis of the entity that owns the college. Government colleges are owned and operated by the State or Central Government. Private medical colleges are owned and operated by private charitable trusts and educational trusts.   Government colleges are known to charge very low tuition fees. These colleges provide subsidized education to its students. Private medical colleges are known to charge relatively higher tuition fees.  

Admission process

Medical entrance exams are conducted to facilitate medical admission process. These exams are conducted at State, College and National levels. Based on candidates’ performance in relevant medical entrance test, a merit list is formed. Based on one’s rank and position in this list, seats are distributed among deserving candidates.  

MBBS is the most popular medical course in India. It is an undergraduate level Degree course. MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. The academic program is 5½ years long. Out of it, one year is dedicated towards internship program.   After completing MBBS, graduates may register with relevant chapter of MCI and start medical practice. They may even go for higher studies. MBBS graduates have access to different types of PG medical courses such as – MS, MD, PG Diploma programs, DNB etc.
