KVPY stands for Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana. It is a popular scholarship program in India. Each year, KVPY application process attracts hundreds of thousands of applications. Here, I’ve listed down some of the best preparation tips, tricks and strategy for KVPY aspirants.

KVPY examination is conducted by IISc, Bangalore. This examination is being organized every year since 1999.   The main aim of this exam is to provide scholarships and fellowships to meritorious science stream students. These scholarships and fellowships motivate brilliant science stream students to pursue a career in R&D sector.   There’s no dearth of talent in India! Visit any school and you will be able to find brilliant students studying in 11th and 12th (Science) classes. But most of them end up pursuing courses belonging to areas such as – engineering, medicine, architecture etc.   Science education and a career in R&D sector is often overlooked by the students. As a result, R&D sector in India lacks raw talent and meritorious candidates.   KVPY was introduced with the aim of changing this scenario. The main aim of this examination is to attract meritorious science students towards higher education (Science sector) and a career in R&D sector.   KVPY examination is conducted at National level. 1 Know who’s eligible & find your stream

Students hailing from different walks of academic life are eligible to apply for KVPY examination. Based on the academic qualification, there exists different KVPY streams. Syllabus varies from one stream to another!   Students studying in 11th science, 12th science and those pursuing relevant undergraduate Science programs are eligible to appear for this exam. Based on their academic qualification, the streams are named as SA, SX and SB streams respectively.

2 Stages and selection process

In order to crack any competitive exam, you must know more about its format, flow of events and selection process. This will help you prepare for each stage and tackle it efficiently.   KVPY consists of two main stages –

• Online aptitude test
• Personal Interview

3 Stream-specific syllabus

As I mentioned before, KVPY consists of three main streams – SA, SX and SB. Before starting preparation, candidates must have in-depth knowledge about stream-specific syllabus.   Each stream consists of the same basic subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. But modules and chapters will vary from one stream to another.

4 Computer test practice

As I mentioned before, KVPY consists of two main stages – online aptitude test and interview. Online aptitude test is a computer based examination. In order to thrive in this test, you must consider taking mock computer based tests. Mock tests on a computer will help you get familiar with the nature of this test.

5 Use online learning portals

I’m a huge fan of online learning portals. Candidates may access these portals on their smartphones, laptops, computers and tablets. Online education portals are known to provide study material, notes, question banks and more.   Based on your requirements, you may rely on free resources or go for paid subscriptions or membership. Online learning portals provide a customized learning experience.

6 Work on concepts and problem solving skills

Rote learning will be helpful for a short period of time. In the long run, this method of learning won’t benefit students! Instead of rote learning, put more effort towards understanding the concepts.   Build a strong foundation, it will help you with your KVPY preparation in the long run. A test like KVPY is designed to test your knowledge and the way you approach science subjects. Rote learning alone won’t help you crack this test. In order to perform well in this test, you must possess deep knowledge of each subject. Work on areas such as – thinking, problem solving and fundamental concepts.

7 Time management

Time management plays an important role in a student’s life. The way he/she manages his/her time will have a great impact on the result.   KVPY aspirants should prepare a balanced and practical time-table. 8 Interview tips

Candidates shouldn’t worry too much about the interview process. The interviewers just want to gauge your subject-specific knowledge and the way you apply it to solve problems. 9 Solve previous years’ question sets

It is quite easy to get hold of previous years’ KVPY question sets. Question papers can be obtained easily online. There exists many forums, blogs and portals that offer these question sets. Obtain such sets and start solving them on a daily basis.
