Salary details of Indian Air Force Officers

Let me tell you one thing, IAF knows to take care of its members very well. The Officers serving IAF are paid well. Along with the basic pay package, IAF Officers also get to enjoy numerous other perks, benefits as well as allowances! Combining all these figures together, the resulting gross salary is pretty handsome! But coming to IAF, money doesn’t matter that much. The glamour and feeling of serving ones Nation overtakes the ‘money factor’ easily! Still, if you think that money matters, this article will give you insights about the salary details of IAF Officers.

Talking about Officer posts in IAF, there are three main Branches in which Commissioned Officers work-

  1. Flying Branch
  2. Technical Branch
  3. Ground Duty Branch

 

The Gross Salaries of Officers belonging to different Branches of IAF are different. Among the three Branches, Flying Branch Officers bag the highest salary each month. They are followed by Technical Branch Officers. Ground Duty Branch Officers come third.

 

Before we check out salary details of IAF Officers, let us get used to some terms, allowances and perks that constitute the monthly Gross Salary of an IAF Officer. Here we go-

  • PPB Stands for Pay in Pay Band
  • GP Stands for Grade Pay
  • DA Stands for Dearness Allowance
  • BS stands for Basic Salary
  • MSP- Military Service Pay
  • FA- Flying Allowance
  • TA- Technical Allowance
  • KMA- Kit Maintenance Allowance
  • TA- Travel Allowance

 

Those are some of the components and allowances that make up the Gross Salary. Note that Flying Allowance is provided to Flying Branch Officers only and Technical Allowance is provided to Technical Branch Officers only.

 

• Salary details of IAF Flying Branch Officers (Pilots)

  • PPB= 15,600 Rupees per month (Pay Band 3 of scale: 15,600-39,100)
  • GP (Grade Pay)= 5,400 Rupees per month
  • MSP (Military Service Pay)= 6,000 Rupees per month

 

Basic Salary= PPB+GP+MSP= 27,000 Rupees per month

  • DA (Dearness Allowance)= 30,5100 Rupees per month (at the rate of 113% of Basic Salary)
  • Flying Allowance= 13,500 Rupees per month
  • Kit Maintenance Allowance= 600 Rupees per month
  • Transport Allowance= 3,200 Rupees+ DA (in case of major cities) and 1,600 Rupees+ DA (in case of other cities)

 

Gross Monthly Salary= Basic Salary+ Dearness Allowance+ Flying Allowance+ Kit Maintenance Allowance+ Transport Allowance= 78,426/- Rupees (mentioned in careerairforce website).

 

This Gross Monthly salary figure of Flying Branch Officers will rise, since other allowances like- Location Allowance, Field Area Allowance, High Altitude Allowance etc have not been included in it!

 

• Salary details of IAF Technical Branch Officers

  • PPB= 15,600 Rupees per month (Pay Band 3 of scale: 15,600-39,100)
  • GP (Grade Pay)= 5,400 Rupees per month
  • MSP (Military Service Pay)= 6,000 Rupees per month

 

Basic Salary= PPB+GP+MSP= 27,000 Rupees per month

  • DA (Dearness Allowance)= 30,5100 Rupees per month (at the rate of 113% of Basic Salary)
  • Technical Allowance= 3,000 Rupees per month
  • Kit Maintenance Allowance= 600 Rupees per month

  • PPB= 15,600 Rupees per month (Pay Band 3 of scale: 15,600-39,100)

Monthly starting salary packages of IAF Officers (Summary)

78,426/- Rupees per month
67,926/- Rupees per month
64,926/- Rupees per month

 

Please note that the above salary specs will rise up when other allowances are added to it. Also, depending upon the area, Travel allowance figure may change.

 

Other important facts and details

IAF cadets will start earning even before they are commissioned as Officers! Cadets will start getting a stipend of 21,000/- Rupees per month when they enter the last year of their training at any of the Air Force Training Institutes!

 

With time, when an Officer rises through Ranks within the IAF, the Gross Salary will increase considerably.

  4. sir,im in btech 1st year mechanical engineering.i love to join in indian air force as a fighter pilot.will the salary shown in this website for the flying squad will increase or will remain the same the whole service period.78,427/-will it increase or not.if yes how much it cn be pls figure this out sir.and what is the procedure to join in indian air force as a fighter pilot.does it cost any money to complete my pilot course in IAF.how many years will it take for me to complete the pilot training in IAF.and im a girl will it be any problem

    • Shreeshaily, the figure will be revised and increased periodically. It depends on the salary commission, I can’t predict what it will be like in the future. You won’t have to spend money for training. Costs are borne by the Government.

  6. Sir, I have 80% in Secondary, more than 75% in Btech(Mechanical) BUT due to severe illness I have 57% in HS.
    Will that HS percentage hamper during SSB interview if I’m able to crack the written test of AFCAT?
    Plz suggest me what to do…..
