GP Rating Admission

The admission process may vary slightly from one college to another. Reputed institutes rely on a merit-based admission process. This is what merit-based selection process looks like –

• Step 1 – Registration.
• Step 2 – Entrance exam or aptitude test (English, GK, domain-specific subjects, personality test etc).
• Step 3 – Panel interview.
• Step 4 – Physical and medical examination.
• Step 5 – Final selection.

The first and foremost step is – registration. After registration, a candidate must appear for a basic selection test/aptitude test/entrance test. Such a test shall consist of subjects such as – English, technical questions (domain-specific) etc.

Candidates who manage to clear the preliminary test and invited to take part in the panel interview stage. The interview is carried out to gauge the overall personality and aptitude of the candidate. Panel interview is followed by a physical and medical test. The medical examination will be carried out by a DGS approved Doctor. Based on these tests, a final merit list will be made. Deserving candidates will obtain admission on the basis of their score/position in the merit list.

Fees

GP Rating course fees may vary from one college to another. On an average, it could be anywhere between 150K to 200K INR.

GP Rating Course Details

GP Rating stands for General Purpose Rating. It is a presea training program. The course duration is 6 months.

The main aim of this course is to provide deck and engine room training to students. The program trains students and turns them into skilled deck and engine room cadets.

After completing this presea training program, a candidate will be able to join the deck or engine department aboard a merchant navy ship! In order to take care of deck or engine department tasks, a candidate must be well-trained in areas such as – seamanship, cargo handling, maintenance work, machine operation and maintenance, etc.

GP Rating program trains students in the above-mentioned areas. After completing this course, a candidate will become capable of performing in the deck department or engine department aboard a maritime vessel.

Duration

The course is 6 months long.

Eligibility criteria

• Minimum educational qualification required to pursue this course is – completed 10th standard from a recognized board. English subject is compulsory and a candidate must have at least 40% marks in English subject board examination.
• Candidates who possess advanced academic qualifications are also eligible to pursue GP Rating course.

Age Limit

Minimum age limit is 17.5 years and upper age limit is 25 years (at the time of commencement of the course).

Physical and Medical Standards

• Minimum height: 157 cm.
• Minimum weight: 50 kg.
• Applicant must be fit for sea duty and must meet all the physical and medical standards set by the DGS.

Eyesight requirements

• Applicants’ vision should be normal (6/6) in each eye.
• Applicants must not have color blindness.
• Corrective lenses are permitted under the following limits and conditions: 6/12 in each eye or 6/9 in the better eye & 6/18 in the other eye for distant unaided vision.
