Types of Engineering Colleges
There exists two main types of engineering colleges in Sikkim –
- Government engineering colleges
- Private engineering colleges
Govt colleges are owned and managed by the State or Central Government. Since Govt takes care of these institutes, they are able to provide subsidized education to students. Private colleges are owned and managed by private charitable trusts and organizations. They are known to charge relatively higher tuition fees. Admission process
Reputed institutes follow merit merit-based admission process. They carry out entrance exams to facilitate the engineering admission process. Under this system, seats are distributed among deserving candidates on the basis of their rank and position in relevant merit list. Some colleges are also known to conduct donation-based admission processes.
Types of Engineering Courses
Engineering education programs are available in different formats such as –
- Diploma
- B.E. or B.Tech.
- M.E. or M.Tech.
- Dual Degree programs
- PG Diploma
- PhD
The above-mentioned formats fall under different academic levels such as – UG, PG and Doctoral Degree. Here are some of the popular engineering courses and their basic details – B.E./B.Tech. is the most popular engineering course in India. It is an undergraduate-level engineering education program. Students who have passed 12th science with PCM subjects are eligible to pursue most of the B.E. or B.Tech. programs. Some B.E. or B.Tech. programs have different eligibility criteria and subject requirements. The course is 4 years long.
Diploma in Engineering is a Diploma certificate program. The course is 3 years long. Students who have passed 10th standard are eligible to apply for admission.
M.E. or M.Tech. is a Master’s Degree course. The academic program is 2 years long. Students who have completed relevant B.E. or B.Tech. program OR equivalent qualification are eligible to apply for M.E. or M.Tech. admission.
Career Prospects
Engineers have access to both Government and Private sector job opportunities. Depending upon their branch and area of specialization, they may even have access to self-employment opportunities.
