South India is home to some of the best engineering colleges and Universities in India. It is home to some of the premier institutes such as IITs and NITs!

Types of Engineering Colleges
There exists two main types of engineering colleges in South India –
- Government engineering colleges
- Private engineering colleges
This classification has been carried out on the basis of the entity that manages the college. For example – Government colleges are taken care of by the State or Central Government. Private engineering colleges are managed and funded by private charitable trusts and organizations. These engineering colleges are known to offer different types of engineering courses. Let us take a closer look at the main types of engineering courses –
Types of engineering courses
Based on the academic level, engineering courses in South India can be classified into the following types –
- UG
- PG
- Doctoral Degree
UG stands for undergraduate level. PG stands for postgraduate level. B.E./B.Tech. is the most popular engineering course in India. It is an undergraduate-level engineering education program. Students who have passed 12th science with PCM subjects are eligible to pursue most of the B.E. or B.Tech. programs. Some B.E. or B.Tech. programs have different eligibility criteria and subject requirements. The course is 4 years long.
Diploma in Engineering is a Diploma certificate program. The course is 3 years long. Students who have passed the 10th standard are eligible to apply for admission.
M.E. or M.Tech. is a Master’s Degree course. The academic program is 2 years long. Students who have completed relevant B.E. or B.Tech. program OR equivalent qualification are eligible to apply for M.E. or M.Tech. admission.

Admission Process
In order to obtain a merit or Government seat, one must crack a relevant engineering exam. These exams are conducted at State, National and College levels. A merit list is prepared to facilitate the admission process. It is prepared on the basis of candidates’ performance in the entrance exam. Seats are distributed among students on the basis of their position in the merit list.
