DDT Course Details

DDT stands for Diploma in Dialysis Technology. As the name suggests, it is a diploma certificate course. It is a paramedical course that deals with dialysis technology domain.

The course is two years long. Candidates who have passed 12th Science with PCB subjects are eligible to pursue this course.

What is dialysis technology all about, some of you may ask. In order to understand what dialysis technology is, we must first known what dialysis process is all about. Come, let us know more about it –

Kidneys form an important part of the body. It is a vital organ. Kidneys are bean-shaped organs. Functions performed by a healthy kidney are as follows – formation of urine, hormone secretion, regulating blood pressure, maintaining acid-base balance, regulating osmolaility etc.

Urine formation is one of the main functions performed by the kidneys.Kidneys receive blood from renal arteries. Blood received is subjected to processes such as – filtration, re-absorption, secretion and excretion. As a result of these processes, urine is produced in our body. Through urine, the kidney excretes a variety of waste products.

In short, kidneys play an important role in the production of urine (and thus excretion of waste products). Kidneys’ capability to process blood is compromised due to factors such as – renal diseases, kidney failure and other conditions.

When such a condition arises, it becomes necessary to purify human blood artificially. This is where dialysis comes handy! In simple terms, dialysis is the process of removing excess water, solutes and toxins from the blood.

Qualified Doctors rely on a hemodialysis machine for carrying out dialysis process. Dialysis technicians are allied healthcare workers who are capable of monitoring or operating this machine. A dialysis technician works under the supervision or guidance of a qualified Doctor!

In order to operate a hemodialysis machine, a person must possess adequate technical and medical knowledge. This is where a program like DDT comes handy! This program trains students and turns them into skilled dialysis technicians!

After completing DDT course, a candidate will be able to perform the following tasks – setting up dialysis machine, patient preparation, patient monitoring, supervise dialysis process, maintain and inspect the dialysis machine, record patient stats, calculate blood flow etc.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum educational qualification required to pursue DDT course is – Passed 12th Science with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects.

Duration

DDT course is two years long.

Admission process

Admission process may vary from one institute to another. Reputed institutes are known to conduct merit based admission process.

Under merit based admission process, a merit list is formed to allot seats among deserving candidates. The merit list is formed on the basis of marks secured by applicants in board examination and/or selection test. Seats are allotted among eligible and deserving candidates on the basis of their rank in the merit list.

However, admission process may vary from one institute to another. For example – some private paramedical colleges are known to conduct direct and/or donation-based admission process.

Fees

Tuition fees depends upon factors such as – type of the college, scholarship status of the candidate, rating of the college etc. On an average, the tuition fees could be anywhere between 6-30K INR per year.

Career prospects

After completing DDT course, a candidate may find an entry level job at multi-specialty hospitals or dialysis centers. At these medical establishments, they may don the role of a dialysis technician.
