Bachelor of Planning is an undergraduate level Bachelor’s Degree program. Many readers have been asking me questions about this professional course. Most questions revolved around the career prospects, nature of work and ‘future scope’ associated with this course. Career prospects and job opportunities

After completing the 4 years long Bachelor of Planning course, graduates may start working as professional planners for Government or Private enterprises and setups.

 

Planners have diverse job opportunities available in front of them. Bachelor of Planning graduates have access to both Government as well as Private sector job opportunities.

 

Well known recruiters

Government Departments related to Urban and Town planning, Government operated Housing schemes, Government Transportation Projects (Highways, Railways and Metros etc), Government Construction and rehabilitation projects, PWD job posts, Municipal Corporation job posts etc are well known Government job opportunities available in front of planning graduates. Government agencies taking care of above mentioned and/or similar services are known to recruit planning professionals.

 

When it comes to private sector, firms indulged in Realty Development, Construction firms, Architecture and Interior Design firms, Public Structure Construction firms (PPP model- like roads and bridges etc), NGOs etc are known to recruit planning professionals.

 

Self employment opportunities are also available in front of planning professionals. Starting a consultancy service is the first thing that comes to my mind, talking about self employment.

 

Nature of work

A planning professional’s main task is to make optimum use of resources available in front of him/her and create functional and comfortable built environment using those resources. Planners are involved in design, planning and construction of human settlements, cities and towns. They are also involved in the planning, design and making of services and facilities useful to the society, such as- transportation systems, drainage systems, sanitary systems, water supply systems etc.

 

Design, planning, surveying, model making, cost estimation, man management and project management form an integral part of a planning professional’s job. To an extent, site visits, supervision and field trips also are involved in this profession.

 

PG courses and further studies

Bachelor of Planning graduates are eligible to pursue Master of Planning as well as relevant M.Tech. and M.Sc. courses. Other than Master’s Degree courses, graduates are also eligible to pursue relevant PG Diploma courses!

    • Most reputed institutes have their own entrance test. Appear for entrance test and score valid marks in it. Not sure about fees particulars though.
