In simple terms, Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by rapidly displaying set of static images that minimally differ from each other. This technique can be used to bring characters to life and make it appear like they are in motion!
Traditionally, stop motion techniques have been used to create animation sequences. It involves photographing the subject one frame at a time and then displaying these images in rapid succession at high frames per second.
As an animator, you may make use of techniques like- 2D hand drawing, 2D Computer generated, 3D Computer generated, stop motion or model animation techniques to create animation sequences. These days, computers and software are used to create works of animation (2D & 3D). This field is also known as CGI.
In B.Sc. Animation program, there exist specialization subjects. Students have to select an area of specialization.

Course details
B.Sc. Animation is UG Degree course. It is a Bachelor of Science Degree program. The course duration is 3 years. The academic program consists of classroom lectures and practical training sessions and workshops.
The academic program is divided into 6 semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months. Evaluation exams are held at the end of each semester. Other than regular evaluation, project work and assignments form an integral part of this course. Depending on the institute, internal tests may also be present in the academic program.
B.Sc. Animation course is a mixture of practical training and classroom sessions.
Eligibility criteria
Students who have passed 10+2 board examination (any stream- Science, Commerce or Arts) are eligible to pursue this course. Minimum marks criteria may exist in case of some institutes (usually around 50% aggregate marks).
Many institutes accept Diploma in Animation holders. Diploma holders are placed directly in the second year of B.Sc. in Animation program.
Admission process
Admission process varies from one institute to another. Some institutes follow direct admission process. Some other institutes follow merit based admission process. Reputed institutes have their own entrance test / qualifying examination.

Some such well known courses are- M.Sc. in Animation and Multimedia, M.Sc. in Animation and Digital Filmmaking, M.Sc. in Visual Effects, MA in Animation and Multimedia, MA in Digital Filmmaking and Animation, PG Diploma in Animation etc.
Master Degree programs last for a period of 2 years. The academic program is divided into 4 semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months.

Career prospects and job opportunities

Starting salary depends on a number of different factors. Prominent factors are- profile of the employer, employee skills, aptitude and grades attained by the employee. General starting salary is around 15-20k Rupees per month. In case of high profile animation studios and media houses, salary figure will be higher than the one mentioned here.
