DMLT Course Details
DMLT stands for Diploma in Medical Lab Technology. It is a diploma-level paramedical course. This program trains students and turns them into skilled medical laboratory professionals!
In a medical lab, samples (such as – blood, urine, stool, saliva etc.) are collected from patients. These samples are then prepared and subjected to relevant tests (under standard conditions). Sample examination at a medical lab helps diagnose the condition/disease that a person is suffering from.
A qualified pathologist is the main in-charge of a medical lab. A medical lab technologist or technician usually works under the supervision of a qualified pathologist.
DMLT course caters to the needs of medical laboratory/pathology sector of healthcare industry. As I mentioned before, the program trains students and turns them into skilled medical lab technicians/technologists.
After completing this course, you will be able to work at a medical lab and take care of the following tasks – collect samples from patients, use/operate relevant equipment and medical instruments, label samples, store and prepare samples for tests, carry out specific tests, use relevant software etc.
Eligibility criteria
Minimum educational qualification required to pursue DMLT course is – Passed 12th Science with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects.

DMLT course is two years long.

Admission process
The admission process may vary from one institute to another. Reputed institutes are known to conduct merit-based admission processes. When it comes to this (merit-based admission) process, marks secured by a candidate in PCB subjects are taken into consideration. A merit list is formed on the basis of marks secured by applicants. Seats are allotted among eligible and deserving candidates on the basis of their performance on the merit list.
However, the admission process may vary from one institute to another. For example – some private paramedical colleges are known to conduct direct and/or donation-based admission processes.
Fees
Tuition fees depend upon factors such as – type of college, scholarship status of the candidate, rating of the college, etc. On average, the tuition fees could be anywhere between 10-20K INR per year.
Career prospects
After completing the DMLT course, a candidate may find an entry-level job at the following establishments – hospitals (pathology department), medical labs, pathology centers, etc. At these places, they may don the role of a medical lab technician.
