This post is about career options, not civil engineering courses, some of you may argue! The reason why I listed different types of civil engineering courses is that – your academic qualification determines the type of job that you will get!
For example, a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering will help you don the role of a lecturer! Similarly, a Doctoral Degree in Civil Engineering will help you build a decent career in R&D sector related to this domain!
Let us check out the list of career options now. In the next section, you will find the list of popular career options available in front of civil engineering graduates. Let us start –
Career options after civil engineering
Civil engineers have access to different types of jobs. Depending upon their academic qualification, they have access to different types of jobs.
Civil engineering is a broad domain. This broad domain is known to generate different types of job profiles. For example, civil engineers have access to job profiles/posts such as – field officer, supervisor, structural engineer, CAD specialist, design specialist, consultant, assistant engineer, chief engineer, project manager and more!
Broadly speaking, civil engineers have access to the following types of jobs –
- Government sector jobs
- Private sector jobs
- Self employment opportunities
1 Government sector jobs
Govt jobs are quite popular among civil engineering graduates. A govt job offers job security, decent salary, decent work-life balance, pension, attractive perks etc. These are the main reasons why youngsters prefer Govt jobs over private sector jobs.
Civil engineers are usually hired by various Government departments/agencies/organizations. Here are some of the prime recruiters –
- Indian Railways
- Armed Forces
- PSUs
- Urban Planning department(s)
- Municipal corporations
- Housing department
- Land and survey department
- Government colleges
- Government polytechnics
- Government research institutes
- And other Govt organizations
When it comes to Govt jobs, selection process is entirely based on merit. Relevant selection tests are carried out to facilitate merit based recruitment process.
If you want to get a Govt job, you must crack relevant selection test and/or interview. Civil engineering graduates may also land Govt jobs, which are not related to the field of civil engineering (such as Civil Services, Govt bank jobs, Clerk etc).
2 Private sector jobs
Private sector enterprises are known to hire civil engineers each year. Some of the primary recruiters include –
- Construction firms
- Civil engineering consultancies
- Architecture firms
- MNCs
- R&D firms
- Private engineering colleges
- Private polytechnic colleges
- And more…
The type of job that you’ll get depends upon your educational qualification. For example, if you want to become a lecturer at a private engineering college, you must complete relevant M.E. or M.Tech. Degree.
3 Self employment opportunities
Civil engineers have access to ample amount of self-employment opportunities. If you are an entrepreneur at heart and have got access to adequate fund, you may start your own construction firm or consultancy. You may take up and complete medium-scale construction projects.
Civil engineers may also don the role of ‘independent consultant’. They may offer services such as – CAD, cost estimation, design process etc.
Tips to find a good job
If you want a Govt sector job, you must crack relevant selection test. Govt job advertisements are published regularly by relevant authorities on their websites, print media and other channels of communication.
One must keep an eye on recruitment portals, newspapers and employment publications. One must also prepare well for the selection test. One may use question banks, practice tests and relevant books to prepare for a selection test.
When it comes to private sector, experience truly matters! Most of the private sector players are keen on recruiting experienced professionals. If you are a fresher, you may take up a job where you’ll be able to learn new things and gather experience. After gaining enough experience, you may jump to another (bigger) firm.
One may even pursue an advanced Degree to boost his/her career prospects. For example, pursuing M.E. or M.Tech. after completing B.E. or B.Tech. will improve your chances of finding a better job!
Other options
Are you unable to find a decent job after completing B.E. or B.Tech. in Civil Engineering? Worry not, this happens with many civil engineering graduates out there!
Civil engineering job market has become saturated now. There are hundreds of thousands of graduates out there!
Candidates graduating from premier engineering colleges are usually able to find a decent job as soon as they graduate (through campus placement or thanks to the premier tag of their college). Graduates hailing from average ranked colleges tend to suffer the most. They usually have to settle for low-paying jobs. Many of them remain unemployed after graduation.
If you are going through this situation, you may go for higher studies. You may apply for advanced programs such as – MS, M.E., M.Tech. or PG Diploma programs.
If you don’t want to pursue long term PG courses, you may even go for short-term certification programs (for example – CAD, piping, design, structural engineering etc).
